DJ Loxley returns with his Drum and Bass show, The Deeper Shades episode 9. Scientific Sound Asia is a radio station, promoter and DJ agency serving the Asian region and beyond.

DJ Loxley, originally from Nottingham, grew up in the heart of the United Kingdom’s 1990s rave movement. This formative era, shaped by hardcore and jungle mixtapes, pirate radio culture and the excitement of underground gatherings, laid the foundation for his understanding of electronic music.

Influential figures such as DJ Seduction, DJ Hype, Mickey Finn and Grooverider guided his early musical direction and anchored him in the fast-rising sound of jungle and drum and bass. BBC Radio 1’s pioneering programme One in the Jungle, hosted by Fabio and Grooverider, played a crucial role in his development, helping him recognise the emotional depth, rhythm and energy that defined the genre.

While studying at university, Loxley broadened his horizons through UK Garage and began performing vinyl-only DJ sets. A weekly residency on Sheffield Live community radio offered a creative platform where he refined his technical skills, explored new strands of electronic music and strengthened his identity as a selector.

After spending some time away from music, a Marcus Intalex mix in 2012 reignited his passion. This moment led him back to record collecting and the expressive styles that had always resonated with him. Artists such as Calibre, Intalex, Fabio and Marky shaped his renewed focus and reconnected him with the sound that first sparked his journey.

Now based in Asia, where he has lived for almost two decades between Thailand and Vietnam, DJ Loxley presents a wide spectrum of drum and bass. His sets flow between deep and atmospheric selections, soulful rollers and bright melodic cuts, blending the heritage of his UK roots with the evolving character of the modern global scene.

For episode 9, he continues this direction with a selection shaped around atmospheric drum and bass, highlighting the style and influences that define his approach. Thoughtful, authentic and always evolving, DJ Loxley offers listeners an immersive window into the culture and emotion of drum and bass.

The set opens with a gentle rise into atmospheric drum and bass, guided by the drifting pads and soft percussion that define Mineral, Blade and Response. Early selections create an open and reflective tone, the kind that lets the breaks breathe while subtle melodic fragments pull the listener forward.

Nine Windows and Marc Renton carry this feeling into deeper territory where crisp percussion sits beneath warm ambience. Momentum builds gradually as textures become more intricate.

Artists from labels such as Omni Music, Northern Front and Fokuz introduce rolling structures that glide rather than push. The middle stretch balances ethereal layers with grounded bass movement, giving the mix a sense of lift without losing clarity. Pieces by Mystic Trip, Kid Drama and Modular II add that classic intelligent drum and bass touch, measured and fluid.

Further into the journey, the influence of atmospheric jungle rises to the surface with contributions from Rumbleton, Fracture and Friske. Their work brings a sharper edge, nodding to early breakbeat experimentation while remaining smooth enough to fit the wider mood.

Suburban Base and Metalheadz influences appear, yet the set avoids becoming heavy. Instead, it stays focused on space, tone and emotion. The closing selections return to a calmer shape where liquid sensibilities merge into the atmospheric palette.

Producers such as Greekboy, FX909, Winslow and Ink help the set settle into a reflective phase, ending the experience with quiet brightness rather than intensity. The final impression is one of cohesion, a steady exploration of the atmospheric drum and bass spectrum held together by texture, restraint and depth.

Tune in to the live broadcast on Thursday, December 4th, from 8 PM to 10 PM Indochina Time (ICT). A replay will be available on Monday from 8 AM to 10 AM (ICT).
