DJ Loxley, originally from Nottingham, has his roots in the UK rave scene of the 1990s, which was marked by hardcore and jungle mixtapes, pirate radio, and the vibrant energy of teenage raves. His early exposure to influential DJs such as DJ Seduction, DJ Hype, Mickey Finn, and Grooverider forged a strong connection to the sounds of jungle and drum and bass.
The early BBC Radio 1 show “One in the Jungle” with Fabio and Grooverider had a particularly significant impact, deepening his love for the scene. During his university years, Loxley ventured into UK Garage, spinning vinyl and holding a weekly residency on Sheffield Live community radio, which enriched his musical background.
After taking a break from music for a while, his passion was reignited in 2012 by a mix from Marcus Intalex, renewing his commitment to drum and bass. From that point on, artists such as Calibre, Intalex, Fabio, and Marky became central to his listening and inspiration, leading him back to record collecting and mixing.
Currently residing in Asia, where he has lived for nearly two decades in Thailand and Vietnam, DJ Loxley showcases the entire spectrum of drum and bass, with a focus on the deeper and more atmospheric aspects of the genre. His sets reflect both the classic influences that shaped him and the evolving sound of contemporary drum and bass.
The mix begins with Astral Haze setting a hypnotic tone, blending shimmering pads and rolling percussion that open the path for Carter & Calcuton’s deeper rhythms. Ink and Architex bring the signature Architecture warmth with subtle tension, while Wagz and Bungle follow with layered atmospherics and intricate basslines. Loxley eases between head-nodding grooves and liquid serenity, each selection reflecting his ear for detail and patience in the mix.
As the momentum builds, Calibre steps in with soulful finesse, joined by Need For Mirrors’ fluid textures and Phaction’s tight percussion. The interplay between melodic nuance and low-end punch defines this section, evoking the deep, emotive side of Drum & Bass. HLZ, Nu:Tone and Anile push the energy forward, keeping the sound organic yet powerful, creating a perfect midpoint that balances reflection and drive.
The second half ventures darker and heavier. Ant TC1, Philth and Immers draw on classic techstep tension, while Spirit, Total Science and Digi’s unmistakable rhythms ignite the floor. Old-school nods from Ryme Tyme and Section bring raw nostalgia, complemented by fresh precision from HLZ and Randall. Throughout, Loxley manages to weave the sub-genres, techstep, liquid, and atmospheric, into a seamless whole.
The set’s final stretch drifts into more introspective territory, where Silent Dust closes the show with ethereal elegance, echoing the spiritual depth that defines Loxley’s approach. From the rolling breaks of Metalheadz to the immersive sounds of Straight Up Breakbeat, The Deeper Shades 3 is a refined exploration of Drum & Bass in all its moods, deep, intelligent, and utterly absorbing.
Join the live broadcast on Thursday, October 16th, from 8 PM to 10 PM Indochina Time (ICT). A replay will be accessible on Monday, from 8 AM to 10 AM (ICT).
