DJ Loxley, hailing from Nottingham, has roots in the UK rave scene of the 1990s, characterised by hardcore and jungle mixtapes, pirate radio, and the vibrant energy of teenage raves. Early exposure to influential DJs like DJ Seduction, DJ Hype, Mickey Finn, and Grooverider forged a strong connection to the sounds of jungle and drum and bass.
The early BBC Radio 1 show “One in the Jungle” with Fabio and Grooverider was particularly impactful, deepening his love for the scene. During his university years, Loxley branched out into UK Garage, spinning vinyl and maintaining a weekly residency on Sheffield Live community radio, which enriched his musical background.
After stepping away from music for a while, his passion was reignited in 2012 by a Marcus Intalex mix, renewing his commitment to drum and bass. From then on, artists like Calibre, Intalex, Fabio, and Marky became central to his listening and inspiration, leading him back to record collecting and mixing.
Currently residing in Asia, where he has lived for nearly two decades in Thailand and Vietnam, DJ Loxley showcases the entire spectrum of drum and bass, with a focus on the deeper and more atmospheric aspects of the genre. His sets reflect both the classic influences that shaped him and the evolving sound of contemporary drum and bass.
DJ Loxley opens The Deeper Shades 2 with precision and poise. The early flow features Singr’s “Time & Space”, Mark System’s “Final Approach”, and Technimatic’s “Inner Sanctuary,” blending shimmering Liquid Drum & Bass with moody, atmospheric warmth. Rolling rhythms from Walk.r and Mosaic deepen the pulse, while Bungle’s “Twilight” adds the soulful vibrance that defines the series’ emotional core.
In the mid-set, the groove tightens into minimalist focus. Resound’s “Monomial” and Need For Mirrors’ “Dalston Strut” showcase stripped percussion and precision engineering. Marcus Intalex’s “Steady” anchors the section with timeless depth, while EIJER and Satl add clean, subtle bass dynamics. The set moves effortlessly from heritage tones to crisp modern structure, demonstrating Loxley’s understanding of contrast and flow.
The darker textures arrive through HLZ’s “Rust”, Amit’s “Hazar,” and Friske’s “Overstep,” where Techstep edges meet experimental half-time atmospheres. Ink’s “Scorpion Style” and SD’s “Noir” intensify the tension before Jungle elements emerge in “London Ting” by Future, Ink & S1 and Tim Reaper’s “Something Unreal.” These moments tie modern production to the raw origins of Drum & Bass.
As the set closes with Spirit & Total Science’s “Rumble” and Double O’s “Straight 98 (Escher Remix),” the tone softens, drawing back toward introspection. The Deeper Shades 2 encapsulates the genre’s full emotional range, from the serene to the industrial, proving that DJ Loxley remains one of the scene’s most skilled curators of depth, rhythm and soul.
Join the live broadcast on Thursday, October 9th, from 8 PM to 10 PM Indochina Time (ICT). A replay will be accessible on Monday, from 8 AM to 10 AM (ICT).
