DJ Loxley returns with a new edition of his drum and bass series, The Deeper Shades episode 10, broadcast on Scientific Sound Asia. The station continues its role as a radio platform, promoter and DJ agency connecting underground electronic music across Asia and internationally.
Originally from Nottingham, DJ Loxley came of age during the UK’s 1990s rave explosion. Immersed in hardcore and jungle mixtapes, pirate radio broadcasts and the energy of underground parties, this era played a defining role in shaping his musical identity and long-term connection to drum and bass culture.
Early inspiration came from influential artists such as DJ Seduction, DJ Hype, Mickey Finn and Grooverider, whose sound helped anchor him firmly within jungle and the rapidly evolving drum and bass movement. BBC Radio 1’s One in the Jungle, presented by Fabio and Grooverider, proved especially formative, highlighting the genre’s emotional range, rhythmic depth and raw dancefloor power.
While studying at university, Loxley broadened his musical outlook through UK Garage and began performing vinyl-only DJ sets. A weekly residency on Sheffield Live community radio became a crucial creative outlet, allowing him to develop his technical ability, explore deeper musical pathways and refine his voice as a selector.
After a period away from music, a Marcus Intalex mix in 2012 reignited his passion and drew him back to record collecting and the more expressive, soulful end of drum and bass. Artists such as Calibre, Intalex, Fabio and Marky became key reference points during this renewed phase, reinforcing his connection to the sound that first inspired him.
Now based in Asia, where he has lived for almost two decades between Thailand and Vietnam, DJ Loxley brings a broad and considered approach to drum and bass. His selections move fluidly between deep and atmospheric cuts, warm soulful rollers and uplifting melodic tracks, blending the heritage of UK drum and bass with the perspective of a global underground scene.
The opening stretch of the mix sets the tone with deep liquid foundations, led by Calibre’s signature warmth and Paul SG’s jazz-inflected grooves. Smooth basslines, restrained percussion and melodic detail create a spacious introduction that feels reflective rather than explosive, easing the listener into a late-night headspace built for focus and immersion.
As the set develops, the mood tightens through minimal and deep drum and bass cuts from Marcus Intalex, Lynx, Bredren and Insideman. The grooves become more skeletal and weight-driven, with subtle rhythmic shifts and low-end pressure taking precedence over melody. This middle section highlights the understated power of restraint, where space and tension do most of the work.
Further into the journey, autonomic and jungle-rooted influences surface through artists such as Kid Drama, Blocks & Escher, Goldie and Paradox. Break patterns become more intricate, atmospheres darker and more textural, while classic lineage references reinforce the connection between modern minimalism and drum and bass history.
The closing phase leans into darker, more forceful territory with material from Exit, Dispatch and Metalheadz-associated artists, before circling back toward deep, introspective tones. Rather than ending on impact alone, the set resolves with balance and clarity, reinforcing The Deeper Shades' identity as a space for nuanced, system-focused drum and bass rather than peak-time spectacle.
Tune in to the live broadcast on Thursday, December 18th, from 8 PM to 10 PM Indochina Time (ICT). A replay will be available on Monday from 8 AM to 10 AM (ICT).
