Interview Guest: Ras Kass.

Ras Kass is a highly respected American MC known for his intricate lyricism, deep historical insight, and sharp social commentary. Emerging from the Los Angeles underground scene in the 1990s, he quickly gained recognition for his intellectual approach to hip hop, blending street realism with academic-level analysis and wordplay.

His stage name was inspired by Ethiopian Emperor Ras Kassa Mircha, reflecting his interest in African history and consciousness. His 1996 debut album Soul on Ice became an underground classic, celebrated for tracks like Nature of the Threat, which tackled race, politics, and global history with rare depth and complexity.

Ras Kass followed with Rasassination in 1998, further proving his ability to combine razor-sharp lyricism with strong production and thought-provoking themes. Despite challenges with record labels and industry setbacks, Ras Kass continued to release influential independent projects, maintaining his place as one of the most skilled lyricists in hip hop.

He also co-founded the supergroup The HRSMN with Canibus, Killah Priest, and Kurupt, a collaboration that united some of the most respected underground rappers of their era.

Renowned for his ability to mix historical context, wordplay, and street intelligence, Ras Kass remains a vital figure in true-school hip hop, his catalogue continues to inspire artists and fans alike, standing as a testament to lyrical mastery, integrity, and the enduring power of conscious rap.

The show opens with Scar Tissue, a sharp introduction from Ras Kass, Wais P, and Treach that instantly sets the tone. Classic Boom Bap drums and soulful loops build momentum as 42 and Reverse Engineering showcase Ras Kass’s lyrical depth and DJ King Flow’s crisp production, proof of their chemistry and shared respect for the craft.

Momentum continues as Lloyd Banks’ Made A Fool Of Me and Ransom’s collaboration with DJ Premier bring melodic grit to the forefront. Tracks by Pretty Bulli and RJ Payne amplify the underground spirit, while Sharpen Your Steel adds modern bite through intricate flows and aggressive delivery that blend perfectly with the show’s raw tone.

As the hour unfolds, Big K.R.I.T. and Big Sant offer Southern flavour, balancing conscious wordplay with funk-driven rhythms. Rome Streetz and Cormega raise the intensity again with Weight Of The World, anchoring the mix firmly in the timeless East Coast Hip Hop aesthetic that defines Mixtape Addict.

The episode’s final stretch shifts from reflective storytelling to forceful declarations. Cuts like Chaos Of The World and Boom Bap Or Die demonstrate DJ King Flow’s commitment to the culture, blending lyrical precision with immaculate sequencing. By the time Ras Kass joins him for their closing interview, it feels like a summit between generations of hip hop artistry.
