Since launching Mixtape Addict in 2015, DJ King Flow has developed the series into a respected hub for independent artists, combining hip hop radio broadcasts, interviews and mixtape releases to highlight genuine talent and strengthen the underground community. Alongside his work as a selector, he continues to expand his creative output as a producer.

His instrumental album The Adventures of F.J. Parker blends jazz-influenced melodies, soulful textures, deep grooves and the raw character associated with classic hip hop production. Mixtape Addict 99 welcomed Indigo Phoenyx for a focused interview on authenticity, mixtape culture, female MCs, collaboration, personal growth and her current creative output. Indigo Phoenyx opened by speaking about DJ Premier as her all-time favourite DJ, highlighting his longevity, his work with Guru in Gang Starr, and the way he has kept a classic sound alive while still sounding fresh. She also spoke about meeting him in person and respecting his humility, describing that balance of talent and approachability as something important in hip hop.

The interview moved into collaboration, with Indigo explaining that she likes working closely with producers, especially in-house producers on her label and newer beatmakers who deserve a platform. She also discussed her own promotional work, including press releases, email blasts, interview setup, bios and support for artists such as Sadiq, John Jiggs and others.

A major part of the conversation centred on authenticity. Indigo spoke openly about her life experiences, including running away from home, gang involvement, personal struggle, loss, grief and overcoming difficult periods. She made it clear that her music comes from real experience rather than image, and that she wants listeners to understand that adversity can be survived and overcome.

On mixtape culture, Indigo said she still loves the format and misses the era of remixes, unreleased tracks, hot joints, drops, skits and strong transitions. She revealed that she has already started working on a mixtape series, beginning with a remix of an Alchemist, Hit-Boy and Boldy James track titled Not Too Much. She said a good mixtape needs layers, a strong intro, hard beats, smooth transitions, cuts and scratches. If she could have chosen one legendary DJ to host her tape, she would have chosen DJ Kayslay.

Indigo also reflected on her beginnings as an artist. After taking her Shahada at 17 and spending time on a spiritual path, she began turning poems into songs and raps. Later, after posting Allah’s Daughter on MySpace, Professor Griff from Public Enemy reached out, met with her and encouraged her to keep developing her craft, which helped push her towards taking music seriously.

Looking ahead, Indigo said she has several projects coming, including Apex Rituals with Teck-Zilla, Sequoia Symphony with 29 Kill, music with Vinz Vega, projects with her Triad crew, and a collaboration with a hip hop legend she has not yet named. She is also working on film writing, horror projects and books connected to culture and self-improvement.

The interview closed with advice for young female MCs. Indigo encouraged them to keep their integrity, control their emotions, use discernment, stay authentic and keep going even when the path feels difficult. She also spoke about wanting more unity between women in hip hop, more collaboration, more shared projects and less ego-driven competition.
