Bicycle Corporation returns with episode 207 of Roots on Scientific Sound Asia, an Asian electronic music radio station, DJ agency and promoter publishing music news and connecting audiences across the region and internationally.

Bicycle Corporation is the long-running collaboration between Italian DJ and producer Marco Mei and multi-instrumentalist Stefano Ugliano, known as 6884. Their catalogue spans deep house, French house, tech house and techno, while their broader interests reach into jazz, funk, disco and global rhythms.

Marco Mei came up through the Urban People collective in the early 1990s, a network that played a significant role in shaping Italy's underground house and techno culture. His work as a DJ, promoter and event organiser built a reputation that led to international bookings and a residency at Pacha in Sharm-El-Sheikh.

Stefano Ugliano's musical foundations were laid through classical piano, percussion and drums, drawing from composers including Chopin alongside the rhythmic traditions of West African music. That formal training and a parallel interest in electronic production eventually came together in a creative approach that balances technical discipline with experimentation.

Together the pair have built Bicycle Corporation around a shared appetite for discovery, drawing on decades of global musical culture alongside contemporary electronic sounds. Their Bandcamp archive has made earlier and overlooked releases accessible to listeners reconnecting with the project's back catalogue.

Roots provides a dedicated outlet for that wider musical vision, moving away from club-focused material to explore the soul, funk, disco, afrobeat, Brazilian music, jazz fusion and rare groove that continues to inform their work. Episode 207 continues that exploration.

Bicycle Corporation Roots 207 opens with JKriv's Corpo Escultural, its Afro Disco groove establishing the episode's eclectic, archive-minded sensibility from the outset. Fad Gadget's Coitus Interruptus follows, Frank Tovey's industrial New Wave project arriving as one of the more provocative selections alongside Heaven 17's I'm Your Money in its 1981 Instrumental form, the Sheffield group's Synth-pop and Electro-funk sensibility sitting at a deliberate remove from the Funk and Disco that surrounds it.

Manu Dibango's Sun Explosion brings the set back to African Funk territory, the Cameroonian saxophonist's 1978 recording blending driving brass and funky xylophone in a track that connects the Disco era's absorption of African rhythmic ideas to the Afrobeat tradition. Mystic Merlin's Just Can't Give You Up, and DA SHIX!'s Turn Me Loose in the Uncle Jam 12 Inched Disko Fix follow, the latter a contemporary edit of a Philadelphia Funk classic that connects the Gamble and Huff legacy to present-day edit culture.

Rose Royce's Car Wash in the DJ S Rework and Stupid Human and Sylvester's Somebody To Love in Hugh's Vocal Dub develop the Disco direction before Hatori Hanso and W.A.R.'s Low Rider recontextualises War's 1975 Chicano soul classic within a Breakbeat House framework. Dom Um Romao's Ginga Gingo in the Woody Braun Edit then arrives as one of the episode's more culturally specific selections, the Brazilian percussionist's Jazz Music and Funk sensibility rooted in the late 1960s and early 1970s Brazilian jazz scene.

James Brown appears twice in close succession, Good Foot Ants In My Pants in the Crib Edit Combo and Sex Machine in the OPOLOPO Remix, the latter a contemporary reworking of the Godfather of Soul's most iconic recording that pulls it into Nu Disco territory. Black Cock's Frog Scene in the DJ Harvey Edit from 1997 follows, its Wave, Synth and Industrial Electro-pop character providing another moment of deliberate genre displacement within the episode's broader Funk and Disco framework.

Yse Saint Laur'ant's Midnight Thing and Kevan Adrian's Give It Up in the Mark Grusane Original Mix bring Deep House and House qualities to the episode before Instant Funk's Body Shine in the Tee Scott Mix returns to Funk and Disco territory. The Salsoul connection is a direct link to the Philadelphia and New York club scenes of the late 1970s, Tee Scott's extended mix placing the track firmly within that era's dancefloor culture.

Bombers' (Everybody) Get Dancing closes the main selection with one of 1979's most exuberant Disco productions, the Montreal group's track a cult favourite that earned rapid attention from New York's underground club circuit after its original release. Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66's Viramundo in the Danny Krivit Mr. K Edit closes Bicycle Corporation Roots 207, the Brazilian bandleader's Bossa Nova classic recontextualised by one of New York's most respected edit specialists.

The episode is a characteristically wide-ranging piece of curation, drawing on Cameroonian Funk, Philadelphia Soul, Brazilian Jazz, New Wave electronics and Disco across a tracklist that spans from 1975 to the present day.

Tune in to the live Roots show on Sunday, June 14th, 2026, between 6 PM and 8 PM Indochina Time (ICT), or watch the replay on Thursday from 6 AM to 8 AM (ICT).
