Bicycle Corporation returns with episode 206 of Roots on Scientific Sound Asia. The platform operates as an Asian electronic music radio station, DJ agency and promoter while also publishing music news and connecting audiences across the region and internationally.

For more than a decade, Bicycle Corporation, the collaboration between Italian DJ and producer Marco Mei and multi-instrumentalist Stefano Ugliano, also known as 6884, has maintained a distinctive place within underground electronic music. Their catalogue spans Deep House, French House, Tech House and Techno, while their broader musical interests continue extending far beyond the dancefloor into the worlds of jazz, funk, disco and global rhythms.

Marco Mei's journey began in the early 1990s through the influential Urban People collective, which helped shape Italy's emerging underground house and techno culture. His work as a DJ, promoter and event organiser established a strong reputation within the scene, eventually leading to international bookings and a residency at Pacha in Sharm el-Sheikh, where he further refined his eclectic and globally influenced approach to music.

Stefano Ugliano developed his musical foundations through classical piano, percussion and drums, drawing inspiration from composers such as Chopin alongside the rhythmic traditions of West African music. His formal training and fascination with electronic music production eventually merged into a creative approach that balances technical precision with musical experimentation.

Together, Marco and Stefano have built Bicycle Corporation around a shared passion for discovery, blending electronic music with influences drawn from across decades of global musical culture. Their continued exploration of both contemporary and classic sounds has remained a defining characteristic of the project, while their Bandcamp archive has allowed listeners to reconnect with earlier releases and overlooked material from throughout their career.

The Roots series provides an outlet for this wider musical vision. Rather than focusing exclusively on club music, the programme explores the records, artists and genres that have inspired their journey, moving through Soul, Funk, Disco, Afrobeat, Brazilian music, Jazz Fusion, Rare Groove and other influential styles that continue shaping their perspective today.

Bicycle Corporation begins this edition of Roots with Jean-Michel Jarre’s Zoolookologie, immediately setting a futuristic electronic atmosphere before Bill Laswell’s Work Song introduces experimental Leftfield textures. Black Devil’s Timing, Forget The Timing and Black Man & Wind Storm’s Aeo Part. 1 & 2 move the journey into Cosmic Disco and Italo-inspired territory, capturing the adventurous spirit of late 1970s and early 1980s underground electronic music.

The programme continues through Bob James’ Moonbop, Conrad Schnitzler’s Der Wagen Der Rollt and China’s China Slow, moving between Smooth Jazz, electro, Industrial experimentation, and Pop Rock influences. Can’s Future Days remains one of the defining recordings of the Krautrock era, while Craig Leon and Edgar Froese deepen the atmospheric side of the selection through ambient and Berlin-School-inspired compositions. Eric Hine, Explorer and Führs Fröhling, add further Synth-pop, Cosmic Sound, and Disco influences to the evolving journey.

The middle section explores pioneering electronic experimentation through Brian Eno and David Byrne’s Regiment, Beat The Drum’s Try and Clara Mondshine’s Die Drachentrommier. Klaus Schulze continues the Berlin-School connection with Tango-Saty, while John Lee and Jerry Brown, Jan Akkerman and Passport introduce Jazz-Rock, Fusion and Jazz-Funk elements. These recordings demonstrate how electronic music, jazz and progressive experimentation frequently crossed paths during this period.

The final stretch moves through Logic System, Manepiknik, Mark Shreeve and Material, highlighting the growing influence of synthesiser technology and studio experimentation. Noise Abroad and Nyrabakiga introduce darker avant-garde and industrial textures before Passport’s Ostinato and Per Cussion’s 42nd Street Heartbeat bring rhythmic Fusion and Jazz-Funk grooves back into focus.

Clive Stevens & Brianchild, Planet P and Prince Far-I And The Arabs close the episode, moving from Disco and New Wave into Dub Reggae. Throughout the programme, Bicycle Corporation presents a carefully curated snapshot of the innovative artists who helped shape electronic, experimental and underground music culture across multiple decades.

Watch the live Roots show on Sunday, May 31st, 2026, from 6 PM to 8 PM Indochina Time (ICT), or catch the replay on Thursday from 6 AM to 8 AM (ICT).
