Marco Mei has published the tracklist for episode 21 of 2021, broadcast on Saturday the 22nd of May. Scientific Sound Asia is an English-language electronic music radio station, DJ agency, music news outlet and events promoter covering electronic music across Japan, China, Thailand, Taiwan, Korea, Sri Lanka and beyond.
With over thirty years behind him as a DJ and producer, Marco Mei has built a career that spans continents and genres. His roots in afrobeat and early synthesised music gave him a wider frame of reference than most when he stepped into DJing in Italy in the early 1990s.
The Pacha Club residency in Sharm-El-Sheikh was an early turning point, widening his circuit considerably. Clubs including Woo Bar, Fuse in Brussels, Room 18 in Taipei, Bangaluu in Berlin, G-Star in Pattaya, SOS Supper Club in Bali and NLO in Minsk followed across subsequent years. He can be found on Facebook.
Over the years he has appeared alongside Roger Sanchez, David Morales, Ralph Falcon, Sander Kleinenberg, Harry Choo Choo Romero, Justin Berkmann and Funk D'Void among others. Those shared stages helped cement a reputation that has extended well beyond Italy's borders.
Bicycle Corporation, his production partnership with Stefano Ugliano, known as 6884, grew out of a meeting of musical minds in 2009. Their output through 17:44 Records and subsequent labels including Alchemy, Miniatures, WL77, GrooveTraxx, Suka and Revox now runs to over fifty tracks and remixes. Early material from the project has been made available through their Bandcamp page for those wanting to explore their back catalogue.
Based in Taipei, Marco plays regularly across South East Asia, staying connected to a network of artists and promoters that has grown steadily through those appearances. He is available for bookings through the Scientific Sound Asia DJ agency and broadcasts weekly on our radio station.
Marco Mei's 2021 Podcast 21 opens with Dubby Disco Boyz's Shift Up Your Gear and Andy Bach's Free Your Body setting a warm and groove-led tone. Mr Doris and Dazzla's Everything Is Anything on Ghetto Disco Records follows with a playful Nu Disco energy. The Bootsy-sampled vocal and rubbery bass make it one of the more immediately distinctive selections in the podcast.
Elninodiablo's Dorotheas Rainbow shifts the register towards cosmic Electronica before Lauer and Dena's Make It Stay in the Gerd Janson Remix returns to a warmer Nu Disco direction. An unknown artist's Get Together featuring a St.Germain sample then introduces a Deep House and Nu Jazz quality that briefly changes the mood.
Ron Trent's In Time featuring TKumah Sadeek arrives as one of the podcast's most considered selections. The Chicago producer's deep house sensibility is fully in evidence here. TKumah Sadeek's vocal carries the track in the tradition of the classic Chicago and New York vocal house releases that Trent has championed throughout his career.
Luke Alessi's Matter featuring Stereo MCs in the Aaaron Remix and Rob Nunjes's Lose Control featuring Naima and Jax Milton in the Master T Rox Remake carry the set through House Music territory. TSOS and Benjy's Kalamba then introduces an Afro House flavour. Mehari's Fame in the Luciano Vocal Remix and Theo Poles's Every Woman featuring Whitney Houston sustain the groove before Rambal Cochet's Fatima Goes Wild adds a Nu Disco edge.
Trance Wax's Northern Sky in the Dusky Remix shifts the podcast towards Progressive House territory. გიორგი ახალაია's AGAPE then provides one of the more culturally distinctive moments in the series. The Georgian artist's Electronica and World Music sensibility sits at a deliberate remove from the House selections surrounding it.
Karim Sahraoui's Nightflow on Transmat Records arrives as the podcast's defining Techno moment. The Frenchman's track on Derrick May's iconic Detroit label connects the podcast directly to the Motor City's foundational electronic music legacy. Cinthie's City Lights in the Gerd Janson Remix on AUS Music and Shannon's Let The Music Play in Alan Fitzpatrick's 6am Terrace Mix then carry the set back through Deep House and classic edit territory.
M&S Presents The Girl Next Door's Salsoul Nugget in the Mighty Mouse Remix delivers a Soulful House and Nu Disco moment rooted in the Salsoul legacy. MD X-Spress's God Made Me Phunky in the 10 Years Of Eats Everything Extended Remix and DJ Gregory's And sustain the House and Deep House direction.
Richy Ahmed and Jamie Jones's I Need It brings a Tech House energy to the closing stretch before De La Soul's Me Myself And I in the RIZZ Edit closes the podcast. The 1989 Native Tongues classic is recontextualised here within a House framework in keeping with Marco Mei's consistent willingness to reach outside electronic music's conventional boundaries.
