Disc jockey duo Many Hands (Berlin and UK) have published their playlist for Basement Soul episode 46. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music station, a DJ agency and a promoter for expatriates and locals in the region and internationally.
Many Hands is the intellectual property of musically absorbed and wide-ranging DJs Jona J and Kava. Jona's real name is Jona Jefferies, and he was born in Barcelona and raised in both Spain and the UK, starting out as a disc jockey in the flourishing free party and rave scene in the Southwest of England in the early nineties.
After relocating to Ibiza, he was enchanted by its Balearic sound and hedonistic style, and he has frequented the island ever since, both as a raver and as a DJ. After his time in Ibiza, Jona moved to Bass City, Bristol, shaped by its inner-city attitude and Sound System Culture, and spent a number of years there refining his craft.
Jona is a free soul, and after being warmly received in Berlin's growing international musical community and performing at a wide range of venues across the city, he returned to the United Kingdom in early 2020. Jona's release Nocturnal, created with his old friend Lewis Hopkin of Stardelta Mastering under the name Sapience for Tom Middleton's Sound Of The Cosmos label, gained strong recognition and radio play from respected DJs including Gilles Peterson, Mala and Laurent Garnier.
Originally raised as a Kiwi, Kava has lived in Berlin for more than ten years. His musical origins lie in the vibrant Wellington music scene, where he was regularly immersed in Soul, Bashment, Hip Hop, Disco, House, Techno and Drum and Bass. He developed in New Zealand, selling vinyl records to the wider public and held several radio shows across different stations.
After moving to Berlin, Kava became a resident of a long-running monthly radio show with Rodi Kirk of Scratch 22 fame, called Float Some and Jet Some, on the now-closed Berlin Community Radio. He also performed at a range of venues across the German capital.
Jona and Kava met through a close associate near OYE Records in Berlin and instantly recognised their shared musical connection. This led to the birth of Many Hands, an eclectic dance, decompression and uplifting music session held in a basement in the heart of Berlin, which is how Basement Soul gained its name.
Jona J and Kava perform across a wide rhythmic and harmonic spectrum. Disco, Soul, Latin and Afrobeat sit comfortably alongside MPCs, drum machines, Jamaican influences from New York, West African synthesiser pioneers and eccentric European funk. Sometimes quirky, sometimes energetic, but always made for the dancers.
Many Hands are vinyl record obsessives and deep musical explorers. They are children of the 1980s with a rich education in nocturnal adventures, naturally drawn to dark basements with heavy sound systems. This is Basement Soul, and everyone is invited to join.
Many Hands open the episode with reflective tones from Gilb’r and David Crosby before drifting into Lone’s soft reinterpretation of ROYGBIV. Orbital’s ambient remix heightens the early mood, while Abbess Hildegard of Bingen and Paul Atreides add spiritual and cinematic layers. Isaac Hayes and Action Bronson introduce grit and warmth, grounding the mix in classic and contemporary soul.
The set deepens through Dwight Trible’s vocal richness, moving into the nu disco feel of Glen Adams & Finesse and the reggae influence of Kofi and Lorna Gee. DJ SCM brings an Italo house edge that blends seamlessly into Pinky Ann Rihal’s Indian-inspired rhythms. Universal Cave and Phantom Slasher push the mix into Balearic and psychedelic territory, widening the emotional range.
Bianca’s Caribbean dub rework adds bright percussive energy, followed by the Lagos flavour of Aura Safari. Jean-Luc Ponty’s jazz fusion provides a sharp rise in tempo before Michael J Blood eases the pace again. Jon Dixon’s Lisbon Nights offers Detroit sophistication, and Ladymonix brings confident modern house. The Black Dog closes this portion with a leftfield electronic shift.
The final stretch continues the warm, soulful movement Many Hands are known for. Alex Lay-Far delivers uplifting deep house before Dazzle shifts into a fusion of acid house, downtempo and UK street soul. The journey ends powerfully with 4 Hero’s Universal Love, a drum and bass classic that lifts the entire episode into a euphoric and timeless finish.
