The Funk Sessions have submitted the playlists for their third show on Scientific Sound Asia, featuring Yushka. The platform operates as an underground electronic music radio station for the Asian region and international audiences, alongside its work as a DJ agency, promoter and music news outlet.
Since 2019, The Funk Sessions crew have been bringing funk-focused party energy to dancefloors across Saigon. Their sound moves through Funk classics, Old Skool Hip Hop, Disco, Party Breaks, Ghetto Funk and other groove-heavy styles.
The collective brings together international DJs from Australia and the United Kingdom, with members based mainly in Vietnam. Their background spans club nights, free parties and festivals, alongside support slots for recognised names from the underground music circuit.
Their musical identity is strongly influenced by the pioneers of Breakbeat. That influence is clear in their Hip Hop, Funky Breaks and Ghetto Funk selections, while also running through the wider structure of their mixes.
The Funk Sessions have held regular events in Ho Chi Minh City at Broma Not A Bar, TNR, Indika and Apt852. Past and present venues also include Secret Weekend, Tempo, Arcan, Haus, Banana Mama, Piu Piu, Sky 9, Rogue Saigon, Soma and Saigon Outcast.
This week’s mix comes from Funk Sessions resident DJ Yushka, who hails from Nottingham in the United Kingdom. Since the mid-2000s, he has played free parties, raves, festivals and club nights across the UK, Ireland and, more recently, Vietnam.
Yushka has supported Drum and Bass figures including EZ Rollers and Kenny Ken, while also appearing at a range of venues in Vietnam. His selections can move through chilled beats, breaks, hip hop, and Electro, often carrying a clear Funk and Soul influence.
Now a resident with Funk Sessions, Boombox and Funk Dem Beats, Yushka brings another angle to the crew’s sound. His contribution to the show connects the group’s Saigon party background with a wider UK-rooted Breaks, Hip Hop and Funk sensibility.
The Funk Sessions episode 3 features Yushka with a selection built around Funk, Breakbeat, Breaks, Hip Hop, Soul and Reggae. Chinese Man opens with Searching For The Space Monkey, placing the show inside a sample-based breakbeat sound connected to Chinese Man Records’ beat-led catalogue.
Waggles follows with Whip The Mic, keeping the opening section in Breakbeat through a party-focused rhythm and vocal cut-up structure. Chali 2na then brings Hip Hop into the mix with Graff Time, adding the Jurassic 5 MC’s deep vocal tone to the early run.
Camille Yarbrough’s Praise You appears in the Jim Sharp edit, moving the show into Soul through a classic source reshaped for DJ use. The Nextmen and Dynamite MC then return to Hip Hop with Round Of Applause, keeping the tempo lively and vocal-led.
Flow Dynamics’ Better On Stage and Souleance’s L’opuleance move the programme back towards Funk, using groove-heavy production and sample culture as the common thread. The Chakachas’ Jungle Fever in the Funk Ferret edit then adds a familiar funk source rebuilt for the breaks circuit.
TP’s Ya Mama in the Ross Go remix brings the show into Breaks with a heavier club edit feel. J Boogie’s Dubtronic Science then introduces Reggae influence with Leave It All Behind, using The Rebirth and Aima The Dreamer to add a smoother vocal shape.
MC 900 Ft. Jesus’ Buried At Sea returns to Hip Hop through a darker spoken and beat-driven setting. Nina Simone’s Baltimore in the Murillo Mongelo remix and Etta James’ U Give Me What I Want in the Cman edit, then bring Soul back into the sequence through classic vocal material.
De La Soul’s Ring, Ring, Ring (Ha Ha Hey) in the Party Line edit gives the middle section another Hip Hop anchor. Ninelives The Cat follows with Let Me In, restoring the Funk thread before Marlena Shaw’s Woman Of The Ghetto appears in the Lego Refunk.
The Breakbeat Junkie and DJP’s Jimmy Joint moves the selection back into Breakbeat, followed by The Allergies’ Get Yourself Some on Jalapeno Records. Jalapeno describes The Allergies through soulful hooks, drums and hip-hop energy, which matches the episode’s link between funk source material and modern party breaks.
Lack Of Afro’s Mongrel Strut returns the set to Funk before Basement Freaks’ Urban Junkie appears in the Timewarp Inc remix. Timewarp Music describes its catalogue around Nu-Funk, Dub, Breaks and freestyle grooves, supporting the track’s place inside the heavier breaks section.
Flow Dynamics’ Shock Ya Mind and Dancefloor Outlaws’ Spinning Wheel keep the late middle section moving between Funk and Breakbeat. Funkanomics’ Boogie Nights then appears for the first time, bringing a Breaks entry before Rueben Bell’s Superjock in the Stickybuds edit restores the funk-led direction.
Sparkee’s Feelin' Right with Def3 and Stevie Wonder’s I Wish in the Ghetto Funk Allstars remix keep the closing run bright, vocal and groove-heavy. Funkanomics’ Boogie Nights then appears again, reinforcing the Breaks pressure before Badboe’s It's Too Late returns to Funk.
Cymande’s Brothers On The Slide in the Father Funk edit and Sly & The Family Stone’s Thank You in the Cosmic Funk Mix bring classic funk sources into the final stretch. Chudy’s Say It and Timewarp Inc’s Yuil Disco Breaks then connect the closing section to modern Funk and Breaks production.
Speedometer’s Kashmir adds a Freestyle Records funk entry before The Funk Hunters bring the set back into Breakbeat with Party Rockin'. K-Bonus’ Ur In There, Right? and Viena Loco’s Funk Intrusion in the Ed Royal remix close the episode with Breakbeat and Latin Music influence, ending Yushka’s show with a broad mix of Funk, Hip Hop, Soul, Reggae and party breaks.
