DJ Loxley returns with his Drum and Bass show, The Deeper Shades 5.

DJ Loxley, hailing from Nottingham, emerged from the heart of the UK’s 1990s rave scene, a time characterised by hardcore and jungle mixtapes, pirate radio, and the exhilarating thrill of underground parties. Early influences from DJs such as DJ Seduction, DJ Hype, Mickey Finn, and Grooverider solidified his profound connection to jungle and drum and bass.
The BBC Radio 1 programme “One in the Jungle”, featuring Fabio and Grooverider, was particularly influential, shaping his comprehension of rhythm, depth, and energy within the genre. During his time at university, Loxley broadened his musical horizons into UK Garage, establishing his reputation through vinyl sets and a weekly residency on Sheffield Live community radio.
After a hiatus from the scene, a mix by Marcus Intalex reignited his passion in 2012, leading to a renewed dedication to the sound. Artists such as Calibre, Intalex, Fabio, and Marky became pivotal inspirations, steering him back to record collecting and DJing.
Now residing in Asia, where he has spent nearly two decades between Thailand and Vietnam, DJ Loxley embodies the full spectrum of drum and bass whilst emphasising its deeper, more atmospheric elements. His sets reflect both the legacy of his formative years and the progressive sounds of the modern era, providing audiences with an authentic and evolving interpretation of drum and bass culture.
DJ Loxley opens The Deeper Shades 5 with a journey through the deeper corners of classic Drum & Bass. Mosus & S.P.Y’s Drop Shadow and dBridge’s Without Answers set a meditative tone, balancing rolling breaks with stripped-back atmospheres. Spirit’s Memories Reversed and DJ Marky’s Medusa contrast darkness and light, moving between gritty Techstep tension and Liquid Funk’s melodic warmth.
The mix then draws into the golden Soul:r years, as M.I.S.T’s Outerspace, Calibre’s Roundhouse, and Marcus Intalex’s Immersed bring emotive textures to the fore. Moving Fusion’s Fishtank and Usual Suspects’ Tribute revisit the heavier early-2000s Metalheadz and RAM energy, before Logistics’ Glitch and Total Science’s Archive lift the set into a bright, soulful groove that defines the era.
Midway through, the tone turns reflective. Commix’s Satellite Type 2 and Zero T & Mosus’ Monarch evoke the precision and restraint of the autonomic sound, while A Sides’ Tokiado and Soul Connection’s Sun Chaser glide through sunlit Liquid territory. Response and Clive Ingredients’ Parasite and Spirit’s Consciousness add darker undertones, giving the mix both contrast and character.
Closing on a high, Loxley blends modern deep rollers with timeless DnB anthems. Alix Perez’s Behind Time and Artificial Intelligence’s Forgotten Truths offer soul-drenched intensity, followed by the metallic precision of Ulterior Motive’s Get Close and Need For Mirrors’ Pow Wow. Marcus Intalex’s Stingray and Bungle’s Warning provide the final flourish, a nostalgic reminder of when Drum & Bass fused emotion, groove, and experimentation seamlessly.
