DJ Loxley: The Deeper Shades - Deep DnB, Techstep Rollers and Jungle

DJ Loxley returns with his Drum and Bass show, The Deeper Shades 6.

British Drum and Bass DJ Loxley stands in front of a statue of Robin Hood as an archer in front of an Nottingham Castle, wearing a blue North Face jacket with his hands in his jacket pockets, with his name and "Deeper Shades Drum and Bass" written on the image. Captured in a color photo taken from the front.

DJ Loxley, originally from Nottingham, grew up immersed in the energy of the UK’s 1990s rave culture, a defining period shaped by hardcore and jungle mixtapes, pirate radio, and the excitement of underground gatherings. Early exposure to DJs such as DJ Seduction, DJ Hype, Mickey Finn, and Grooverider deeply influenced his musical direction, grounding him in the raw, evolving sounds of jungle and drum and bass.

The BBC Radio 1 show “One in the Jungle”, hosted by Fabio and Grooverider, became a cornerstone in his musical education, helping refine his understanding of the genre’s rhythm and emotional depth. While studying at university, Loxley expanded his musical reach into UK Garage, performing vinyl-only sets and holding a weekly residency on Sheffield Live community radio, where he honed his craft and broadened his sonic palette.

After taking a step back from music, a Marcus Intalex mix reignited his passion in 2012, leading to a renewed commitment to the art form. Influenced by the thoughtful, melodic styles of Calibre, Intalex, Fabio, and Marky, Loxley returned to record collecting and DJing, reconnecting with the sound that first inspired him.

Now based in Asia, where he has spent nearly two decades living between Thailand and Vietnam, DJ Loxley represents the full breadth of drum and bass, from deep and atmospheric textures to soulful rollers and high-energy selections. His sets seamlessly combine the heritage of his UK roots with the evolving sounds of the global scene, offering listeners an authentic, immersive, and continually evolving experience of drum and bass culture.

The opening passages set the tone for DJ Loxley’s The Deeper Shades 6, leaning into shadowy minimalism as Kid Drama sketches brooding pads and tight percussion. Samurai’s stern palette from Vardae and The Untouchables pivots through half-time and dubwise pressure. Metalheadz steel and Krunchtime grit raise the tension before Influence and The North Quarter let in liquid light, warm chords and swung drums easing the set into a soulful cadence.

Focus narrows to poised rollers. North Quarter sweetness gives way to ThirtyOne hypnosis, while Silence Groove and Bungle deliver crisp liquid contours. Legacy pressure steps in as Jonny L’s machine funk meets the rugged breakcraft of Ink and Loxy, a clear nod to the lineage. A bright vocal lift from Dimension glances at the dancefloor before Tweakz strips it back to subs, and Gridlok slashes a serrated tech profile across the mix.

Momentum rebuilds on Bristol shoulders. S.P.Y’s glide resets the mood, Dispatch detail from Arp XP and Was A Be locks the groove, and CIA keeps it smouldering. Detail toys with negative space, then Metalheadz nostalgia blooms with the remastered Universe and Calibre’s velvet subs. Souped Up mischief adds a minimalist motif, CIA returns in stern form with Teej, Sofa Sound injects grit, and Total Science restores that effortless roll. The centre curve then flashes dubwise jungle from Acid_Lab, before Drex174’s chrome atmospheres and Bristol weight via Brook and Bungle.

The finale leans into tech lineage and breakwork. DJ Trace’s ominous signature frames the close, Architecture’s slate-grey steppers and DSCI4’s bite add urgency, and Straight Up Breakbeat tears into a rave-facing VIP. Jungle textures deepen on Sacred Lands and Park Shadow’s glide.

Seba and Paradox bring surgical drumfunk, Spirit’s classic menace keeps things taut, and the run-out shifts through Locked Up minimal pressure before Randall’s jungle roll and the amen-charged flourish from Mantra, Tim Reaper and Decibella. DJ Loxley lands the session deep and precise, a live sweep from heads-down rollers to modern jungle colour, true to The Deeper Shades ethos on Scientific Sound Asia.

Join the live broadcast on Thursday, November 6th, from 8 PM to 10 PM Indochina Time (ICT). A replay will be accessible on Monday from 8 AM to 10 AM (ICT).
