Scientific Sound Asia presents the latest instalment of Floating Beats, episode 704, hosted by Portuguese DJ and producer Joshua. As one of Asia’s leading platforms for underground electronic music, DJ talent, and live events, Scientific Sound Asia continues to highlight innovative voices from across the global scene.
Originally from Évora, Portugal, Joshua has been immersed in electronic music since the mid-1990s. His extensive collection, spanning vinyl, cassette, CD, and digital formats, reflects a lifelong dedication to sound, format, and the preservation of underground culture.
Over the years, his musical journey has explored House, Techno, Drum and Bass, and Chillout. Even as the Portuguese rave movement slowed in the late 1990s, Joshua stayed active, organising grassroots events and working with fellow DJs and producers to sustain the underground spirit.
After taking time away to focus on family, he returned with renewed creative energy. With his daughter grown, Joshua launched Floating Beats, a podcast and radio show that signalled his re-entry into DJing and broadcasting.
In 2023, he began releasing original productions under several aliases, including K-Joshua, Joshua Marian, Joshua Fernand, and Joshua Onairam. Each name represents a distinct side of his artistry, from melodic journeys to stripped-back, experimental sounds.
The momentum continued into 2024 with the launch of JFLM Recordings, his own label created to house his multifaceted productions. The imprint also serves as a space for innovative electronic music, further solidifying Joshua’s position in today’s global underground scene.
The mix begins with Apellum’s Twilight Grove and David Duriez’s A Shout In The Dark, setting a moody, hypnotic atmosphere that captures the essence of Raw Deep Hypnotic Techno. DJ Life’s Flusong shifts the energy with a Minimal Tech groove before Fuzoku’s Ode To SW8 2JA remix brings a warm Deep House flow.
The journey continues with DCLVIII OFC’s Fragment Of Soul, introducing a Melodic House & Techno lift, contrasted by Greg Gow’s Analog Soul and D. Diggler’s Fur Falls, which return to darker, hypnotic techno terrain. Moy Santana’s Kosmos and Luigi Madonna’s Surrogate carry the momentum forward, balancing underground rawness with refined production.
Ian O'Donovan’s Sidewinder and Salbany’s Crossroads turn up the pressure with Peak Time Techno intensity, delivering driving basslines and relentless rhythms. The energy pivots with La Fleur & William Kiss’s Free My Mind remix, offering a Tech House pulse that adds groove and movement to the set.
Andy Kneale’s Quanta closes the episode, grounding Floating Beats 704 back in the hypnotic techno sphere. Across the mix, DJ Joshua blends hypnotic techno, peak time techno, minimal tech, deep house, and melodic house with precision, capturing the evolving energy of the dancefloor while keeping true to the Floating Beats ethos.
