Scientific Sound Asia has announced the latest edition of Floating Beats, episode 701, curated by Portuguese DJ and producer Joshua. As one of Asia’s leading underground radio stations, DJ agencies, and event platforms, Scientific Sound Asia continues to spotlight cutting-edge talent from across the global electronic music spectrum.

Hailing from Évora, Portugal, Joshua has been immersed in electronic music since the mid-1990s. His expansive collection, ranging from vinyl and cassette tapes to CDs and digital files, reflects a lifelong dedication to sound and format, preserving the essence of underground culture across generations.

Joshua’s musical journey spans a wide range of genres, including House, Techno, Drum and Bass, and Chillout. Even as Portugal’s rave era began to fade in the late ’90s, he remained deeply involved in the scene, organising grassroots events and collaborating with fellow artists to keep the spirit of the underground alive.

After taking time away from performing and broadcasting to focus on family life, Joshua returned with a renewed artistic vision. As his daughter grew older, he launched Floating Beats, a podcast and radio show that marked the start of his creative resurgence.

In 2023, he began releasing original productions under various aliases, including K-Joshua, Joshua Marian, Joshua Fernand, and Joshua Onairam, each exploring different corners of his sonic identity, from emotive melodies to minimalist and experimental sounds.

Building on this momentum, 2024 saw the launch of JFLM Recordings, a personal imprint designed to support his diverse output and evolving direction. The label not only serves as a home for his productions but also as a platform for boundary-pushing sounds, reinforcing Joshua’s place in the ever-evolving global electronic music scene.

Floating Beats 701 opens with Be Real by Master H and Thought of As by MoMa Ready, setting a warm and soulful tone rooted in classic deep house. Cinthie’s Diva injects pure groove, bridging into Paradise Lost by Acitone, where hypnotic rhythms begin to take hold. These early tracks embody the essence of deep house music, balancing mood and movement.

From there, the journey dives into the heart of techno music, where Asakusa Station by Conrad Van Orton and Night Shadows by Greg Gow showcase the raw, deep, and hypnotic textures that define this set. Cari Lekebusch’s remix of C Theories raises the intensity with its peak time techno structure, while DCLVIII OFC’s Fragment of Soul briefly shifts into melodic house and techno, layering emotion into the groove. These tracks reflect what makes melodic house and melodic techno so compelling for late-night sessions.

The next phase leans heavily into Detroit-inspired techno, with standout cuts like Smooth Ones by DJ Bone, Prism by Ken Ishii, and Atlas by KMYLE offering gritty, hypnotic pulses that drive the mix forward. Marco Bailey’s Morph adds stripped-back energy before DJ Joshua’s alias, Joshua Fernand, appears with Sweaty Euro, blending dub techno inflexions into the raw framework. This section exemplifies why techno from Detroit and dub techno remain essential in underground club culture.

The final stretch arrives with Moy Santana’s Ariake, bringing a propulsive close to this deep and atmospheric session. Floating Beats 701 is a compelling trip through the best melodic techno, hypnotic grooves, and deep house songs, crafted for listeners who crave depth and sophistication in their electronic music journey.
