Renowned DJ Terence C, hosted by Bicycle Corporation, will be gracing the airwaves once again to present his eagerly anticipated second Roots show. As an esteemed figure in the electronic music scene, Terence C brings his expertise to Scientific Sound Asia, a premier electronic music station and DJ agency serving Asia and beyond.
Bicycle Corporation comprises the dynamic Italian duo consisting of DJ and producer Marco Mei alongside the talented Stefano Ugliano, also known as 6884. Together, they boast an impressive portfolio of more than 50 original compositions and remixes spanning the realms of House and Techno.
In the early nineties, Marco embarked on his musical journey as a disc jockey, captivated by the emergence of Electronic music and Afrocentric sounds. Inspired by this burgeoning scene, he ventured into organising his own House Music and Techno events under the banner of Urban People, a collective that gained prominence across Italy.
Marco's exceptional skills behind the decks garnered him considerable acclaim, leading to a coveted residency at Pacha, Egypt. This pivotal role not only earned him widespread recognition but also opened doors to international DJ bookings, propelling him onto a musical odyssey across the globe.
Hailing from Torino, Italy, Stefano exhibited remarkable musical talent from a young age. He immersed himself in the world of music, displaying a passion for classical piano, percussion, and drums. Stefano's dedication led him to study these disciplines with fervour, drawing inspiration from diverse sources such as the compositions of Chopin and the rhythms of West African Djembe.
As Stefano matured, his fascination with music evolved, with a particular allure towards the image of the electronic DJ commanding the crowd. Little did he anticipate that the very electronic beats, initially elusive on Italian radio stations in the '90s, would herald a transformative chapter in his life.
Despite their current success, Marco and Stefano remain grounded in their humble origins. Recently, they have revisited some of their earlier tracks, reflecting on their musical journey and evolution. In a testament to their commitment to their roots, they have established a Bandcamp page to distribute these tracks.
In their weekly Roots radio show, Marco and Stefano showcase artists from Asia whose immersion in Afrocentric sounds has profoundly influenced their electronic music careers. This month, however, they are introducing a change as Terence C takes the reins to present both a House Music radio show and a Techno radio show. This departure from their usual format promises to offer listeners a fresh perspective on the diverse sounds of electronic music, while still maintaining a nod to their Afrocentric roots.
Guest DJ Terence C.
This week, the spotlight shines on Malaysian DJ and producer Terence C, a stalwart figure in the industry who is currently stationed in Shanghai, China. With over two decades of experience as a resident DJ in Kuala Lumpur's most prominent clubs and venues, Terence has cemented his status as a cornerstone of Malaysia's House Music and Techno scene.
Throughout his illustrious career, Terence has had the honour of warming up the stage for some of the biggest names in music. Renowned artists such as David Morales, Fatboy Slim, Pete Tong, and numerous others have graced the stage to find the crowd already electrified by Terence's skilful sets. Such is his reputation that several prominent headliners have specifically requested Terence as their opening act.
Terence's prowess behind the decks has earned him the distinction of being the preferred choice of Digweed whenever he performs in Kuala Lumpur. Their collaborative performances have been a staple in the local scene, playing a pivotal role in shaping the legacy of Malaysia's iconic Zouk club into the globally renowned brand it is today.
Terence is leading the charge in organising monthly Techno events at Zouk, aptly named 'We Love Techno', alongside one of Kuala Lumpur's most prominent figures, DJ XU. These events are dedicated to showcasing underground sounds, drawing inspiration from labels such as Drumcode, Cocoon Recordings, and many others. With a focus on the raw and cutting-edge elements of Techno, 'We Love Techno' promises to immerse attendees in an electrifying atmosphere.
Beginning his journey in 1998 under the guidance of DJ Chris Doss, Terence swiftly made his mark on the music scene, securing residencies at renowned venues such as Cubeat and Globar. His talent and dedication were evident from the start, foreshadowing a promising trajectory in his career. However, a significant turning point came when he landed a coveted warm-up slot for the esteemed David Morales during his inaugural Malaysian performance.
Terence's influence on Malaysia's electronic music scene was further solidified during his tenure as a resident DJ at the iconic Movement Club at the turn of the century. His presence at this seminal venue marked him as a pivotal figure in shaping the country's electronic music landscape. Since then, Terence has been a ubiquitous presence across the city, gracing venues such as Backroom, Nouvo, and Atmosphere.
Terence's influence extends beyond Malaysia, encompassing Southeast Asia as well. His performances at renowned venues such as Lush in Singapore and Liquid in Ho Chi Minh City have solidified his presence across the region. In a notable collaboration in 2005, Terence joined forces with artists Callen Tham and Digital to establish Altered Image, a groundbreaking audio-visual collective that pushed the boundaries of conventional artistic expression.
Altered Image revolutionized the artistic landscape by blending cinematic visuals, turntable beats, and live effects, resulting in mixes that were both pioneering and faithful to their roots on the dance floor. Their innovative approach transcended contemporary norms, offering audiences a unique and immersive sonic experience.
Following their victory in the Malaysian heats of the Heineken Thirst competition that year, the trio embarked on a tour across Southeast Asia under the banner of Altered Image. Their performances garnered widespread acclaim, attracting a new and enthusiastic fan base as they journeyed through the region.
Since then, Terence has continued to assert himself as a pioneering figure in technical innovation. In recent years, he has honed his skills with the Ableton Live production suite, mastering its capabilities to enhance his performances. Today, Terence seamlessly integrates Ableton Live into his sets, alongside traditional decks and CDJs, demonstrating a dynamic fusion of old-school techniques with cutting-edge technology.
As Terence C delves into the realm of production, audiences can anticipate an influx of new releases in the upcoming year, signalling an exciting chapter in his musical journey. His burgeoning presence across Southeast Asia underscores his expanding influence within the region's electronic music landscape.
