Black-and-white portrait of Canadian DJ Spiritual Viking, also known as Trevor Peterson, leaning against a wall in snowy weather, representing his Techno sound and Montreal club background.

Spiritual Viking’s third episode originally aired on Scientific Sound Asia on Sunday 14 March 2021. The platform operates as an Asian underground electronic music radio station for Japan, Vietnam, China, India and international audiences, alongside its work as a DJ agency, promoter and music news outlet.

Spiritual Viking, real name Trevor Peterson, is a Canadian DJ from Montreal. His connection with Techno began in 1999, shaped by the city’s club and after-hours culture during a key period for electronic music.

At the age of 20, he was heavily influenced by Montreal’s nightlife and the weekly gatherings at SONA Afterhours Club. The venue introduced him to international artists and helped form the foundations of his sound.

During that era, Montreal hosted major electronic music figures including Tiesto, Carl Cox, John Digweed, Josh Wink and Richie Hawtin. Those artists became lasting reference points for Spiritual Viking’s musical direction and DJ style.

He first learned to mix using the classic setup of Technics SL-1200 turntables and a Vestax mixer. Living in a loft on St Laurent Street placed him close to many of Montreal’s clubs and nightlife spaces.

Around the turn of the millennium, he played regularly at Quattro Supper Club every Friday and SHED Café every other Saturday. These appearances gave him early exposure within Montreal’s nightlife scene and strengthened his connection with club culture.

That period also brought personal difficulties, as his involvement in the scene became tied to drug and alcohol problems. In 2009, he entered rehabilitation and began rebuilding his life with a renewed sense of direction.

By 2013, Spiritual Viking returned to DJing and reconnected with the music that had first inspired him. He began sharing his sound again in Montreal, performing regularly at local bars and clubs.

His third episode on Scientific Sound Asia presents another view of his Techno background and underground electronic influences. Further music and mixes can be followed through his SoundCloud, where his selections continue to document his work as Spiritual Viking.

Spiritual Viking presents episode 3 on Scientific Sound Asia, with a wide-ranging archive mix shaped around Techno, Melodic House and Techno, Progressive House and Peak Time Techno. The episode features music from Khen, Patrice Bäumel, ANII, Carl Cox, Fabrication, Anfisa Letyago, Green Velvet, Layton Giordani and Mauro Picotto.

Chris Staropoli opens with Lost, setting a Progressive House foundation before Patrice Bäumel’s remix of Khen’s Land Of Goshen shifts the sound towards Melodic House and Techno. ANII’s Korzenie keeps the melodic thread in place, followed by Stan Kolev’s At Every Moment in the Teklix remix and Lanvary’s Everything You Feel in the We Are All Astronauts remix.

Bagback’s Tic Tac brings the first Techno turn, while Anma’s Strangers briefly returns to a Progressive House frame. Fabiotek’s Paralysis and Setaoc Mass, Cleric and John C. Lilly’s Altered States move the episode into deeper Techno territory, with the latter fitting the Deep Techno category through its raw and hypnotic structure.

India and Gerald Peklar’s Pacifistic Loving in the Pawa remix adds a melodic contrast before Eric Fetcher’s CD restores the darker rhythm. Carl Cox’s I Want You (Forever) in the Josh Butler remix and John Tsamis’ Break It in the Danny Gallego remix then introduce a Tech House section.

Keep This, Niukid, Melissa Queen and Marco Effe carry the centre of the mix through Techno and Melodic House and Techno, with Dymo, Internal Terror, Aura and Shells In A Dish forming a tougher middle passage. Niukid’s 30 Dias and Heolik’s Darkside keep the pressure direct before the final third moves into a more forceful club sequence.

Pagano and Chris Bekker’s Hashtag Boundaries opens the Peak Time Techno section, followed by Fabrication’s Dustpig and Anfisa Letyago’s Take It Easy. Green Velvet and Layton Giordani’s Life Lesson adds another recognisable name to the late stretch, while Renehell’s Souleater remix keeps the momentum firm.

Mauro Picotto and Riccardo Ferri’s Organic Electronic brings a House Music reference into the closing stages. Grimes Adhesif’s Kalender Days and Fabiotek’s Moonlight complete the episode with Melodic House and Techno, ending the mix on a more atmospheric final sequence.
