Marco Mei has published the tracklist for episode 33 of 2021, originally broadcast on Saturday the 14th of August. Scientific Sound Asia is an English-language electronic music radio station, DJ agency, music news outlet and events promoter serving audiences across Japan, China, Thailand, Taiwan, Korea, Sri Lanka and beyond.
Marco Mei is an Italian DJ and producer whose thirty-year career traces back to a deep affection for afrobeat, funk and early synthesised music. He began DJing in Italy in the early 1990s and has spent the years since developing a sound that resists easy categorisation.
His international profile grew through a residency at Pacha Club in Sharm-El-Sheikh, which led to appearances at Woo Bar, Fuse in Brussels, Room 18 in Taipei, Bangaluu in Berlin, G-Star in Pattaya, SOS Supper Club in Bali and NLO in Minsk. Shared stages with Roger Sanchez, David Morales, Ralph Falcon, Sander Kleinenberg, Harry Choo Choo Romero, Justin Berkmann and Funk D'Void helped cement his standing on that circuit.
In 2009 he joined forces with Stefano Ugliano, known as 6884, to form Bicycle Corporation, signing first with 17:44 Records. The project has since placed over fifty tracks and remixes on labels including Alchemy, Miniatures, WL77, GrooveTraxx, Suka and Revox. Their earliest recordings are available to revisit on Bandcamp, and his latest news appears on Facebook.
Marco remains based in Taipei, playing regularly across South East Asia and continuing to expand his network throughout the region. Bookings are available through the Scientific Sound Asia DJ agency.
Marco Mei's 2021 Podcast 33 opens with a run of Soma Records selections that establishes one of the podcast's more distinctive opening sequences. H Foundation's Tonight in the Sneakbeats Dub sets a Deep House and dub-influenced tone before Master H contributes two tracks, Thirteen and U Gave Me Love in the U-man Nervous House Remix, the latter connecting the Soma catalogue to a more vocal-led House Music tradition.
Mfon then adds two further Soma selections, Rubberlegs in the Studio 54 Feed The Beat Mix and Dance Of The Drunk Mantis, both from 1999, making the Glasgow label the clear centrepiece of the podcast's opening section. Norty Cotto and United Funk Pilots's Everybody C'mon and Jerome Sydenham and Fatima Njai's Krimson Blossom carry the set through Jackin House and Afro House territory before David Morales and Mr V's Everyday Of My Life delivers one of the podcast's most authoritative Soulful House moments.
Daniel Rateuke and Awen's Gold in the Manoo Remix returns from an earlier podcast before Da Africa Deep and DJ Kid's Who Are You and Studio Apartment's Sun Ra Was Right sustain the Afro House direction. Paolo Rocco and Robert Owens's Ever So in the S.A.M. Remix delivers a further Soulful House moment, Robert Owens's unmistakable vocal providing a warm and culturally grounded contrast to the more functional selections surrounding it.
Paddy Chambers's Emerald Acid introduces an Acid House quality before Mike 303's Summer Love and Mija's Give Em What They Want in the Shadow Child Remix carry the set through House and Tech House territory. Baltra's Dreaming Of A Disco delivers a Nu Disco moment before Catz 'n Dogz's First Night Out in the 10 Years Of Eats Everything Remix on Edible sustains the Tech House direction.
DJ Duke's Techdisco Excerpts and Arthur Baker's The Break 98 in Cevin's NYC Peak Mix carry the set through Nu Disco and Classic House territory, Baker's presence here connecting the podcast to the foundational era of American dance music production. Ohannes Albert's Gimme Your Drum and Enzo Elia's Tocci Touch in the Musumeci Remix carry the set through House and Deep House territory before Krystal Klear's Piano Banana on Running Back makes another appearance across the series.
John Rocca's I Want It To Be Real in Farley's Hot House Piano delivers a Classic House and Garage moment before Ubq Project's When I Fell N Luv in the Maslow Unknown Edit provides a Soulful House and Nu Disco warmth. Tryezz's Later Frequencies on Visions Recordings introduces a Melodic House and Techno quality before Otha's One Of The Girls and Move D's Agaga featuring Ambient Al close the episode, the latter's Deep House and dub character providing a measured and unhurried resolution to one of the more historically rich podcasts in the series.
Marco Mei's 2021 Podcast 33 is a wide-ranging episode that draws heavily on the Soma Records catalogue in its opening sequence before moving through Afro House, Soulful House, Acid House and Classic House across a tracklist that covers multiple eras and scenes with characteristic depth and confidence.
