Marco Mei has published the tracklist for episode 27 of 2021, originally broadcast on Saturday the 3rd of July. Scientific Sound Asia is an English-language electronic music radio station, DJ agency, music news outlet and events promoter serving audiences across Japan, China, Thailand, Taiwan, Korea, Sri Lanka and beyond.
Over thirty years into a career that began in Italy in the early 1990s, Marco Mei remains one of the more distinctive voices in the house and techno underground. His grounding in afrobeat, funk and early synthesised music gave him a frame of reference that most of his contemporaries simply did not have.
The Pacha Club residency in Sharm-El-Sheikh put him on an international footing early on. Clubs across four continents followed, including Woo Bar, Fuse in Brussels, Room 18 in Taipei, Bangaluu in Berlin, G-Star in Pattaya, SOS Supper Club in Bali and NLO in Minsk. He has shared the booth with Roger Sanchez, David Morales, Ralph Falcon, Sander Kleinenberg, Harry Choo Choo Romero, Justin Berkmann and Funk D'Void among others.
Bicycle Corporation, the production partnership he runs with Stefano Ugliano, known as 6884, came together in 2009 through 17:44 Records. Their catalogue across Alchemy, Miniatures, WL77, GrooveTraxx, Suka and Revox now exceeds fifty tracks and remixes spanning deep house, tech house, French house and techno. Earlier work from the project is available on Bandcamp for those wanting to explore the full archive.
Now based in Taipei, Marco plays regularly across South East Asia and continues to build connections throughout the region. His Facebook page carries his latest news, and bookings are available through the Scientific Sound Asia DJ agency.
Marco Mei's 2021 Podcast 27 opens with En Rau's Holding On setting a warm Deep House tone before Supernova's Lovely Summer Dreams in the Gorge Extended Remix develops a Nu Disco and Deep House direction. Nick Curly and Jansons contribute two consecutive Tech House selections with Go and Chip Butty before Ben Rau's French Plan shifts the register back towards a deeper and more minimal direction.
Geraldine Hunt's Can't Fake the Feeling in the Carl Cox Extended Rework arrives as a classic Soulful House moment, the 1980 Canadian disco original given a contemporary reworking by the Ibiza veteran. LF System's Desire then arrives as the podcast's most commercially familiar selection, the Scottish duo's 2021 UK chart hit recontextualised within the Marco Mei format as a Nu Disco and House Music moment.
NiCe7's Disco Change sustains the Nu Disco direction before C-Rock's Funky Dope Trakk shifts into Acid House territory, the 1995 Frankfurt club tool's acid squiggles and jacking groove landing as one of the podcast's most raw and uncompromising moments. Boris Ross and Baggi's What You Do and Wheat's N Night carry the set through Deep House and Minimal territory.
Aaran D's This Is America edit, and the returning Bombay Traffic's Boogie 3000 in Sven Tasnadi's Acid Twist follow before Harry Romero and Erick Morillo's Bang in the Honey Edit and Jovonn's Get Together in the Jovonns Bnd Remix sustain the House and Tech House direction. Chambray's Higher delivers a Soulful House and Nu Disco moment before Catz n Dogz contribute two consecutive Tech House selections with Use Your Mind and No Regrets.
Cinthie's Offenbach Anthem and Digikid84's Cuz I Know in the Mr Gonzo Remix carry the set through House and Tech House territory before Acid Jerks's Monsters featuring Fuzzy Cufflinxxx returns for another appearance across the series. Trance Wax's Northern Sky in the Dusky Remix 2021 provides a Progressive House moment before Dance System's Acid Flash Drive returns the set to Acid House energy.
Kiwi's Hello Echo on Kompakt brings a Minimal and Deep Tech quality before tINI's What If, Then What and Who Else and Albuquerque's Not You carry the set through Melodic House and Techno territory. Ryuichi Sakamoto's Dawn in the Christopher Ledger Edit closes the podcast on a Balearic and neoclassical note, the late Japanese composer's 1999 piano piece recontextualised within a contemporary House framework.
The selection is characteristic of Marco Mei's willingness to reach well outside electronic music's conventional canon for closing statements. Marco Mei's 2021 Podcast 27 is one of the more energetically varied episodes in the series, moving between Acid House, Tech House, Deep House, Nu Disco and Balearic across a wide-ranging and consistently engaging tracklist.
