Scientific Sound Asia presents episode 26 of 2021 from Marco Mei, going out on Saturday the 26th of June. The platform operates as an English-language electronic music radio station, DJ agency and music news outlet and promoter across Japan, China, Thailand, Taiwan, Korea, Sri Lanka and beyond.
Marco Mei is one of Italy's more well-travelled DJs and producers, with a career stretching back to the early 1990s and roots in afrobeat, funk and early synthesised music. That breadth of taste has given him an approach to selection that sits outside any single genre.
Pacha Club in Sharm-El-Sheikh provided the platform that took his career international. The years that followed brought appearances at Woo Bar, Fuse in Brussels, Room 18 in Taipei, Bangaluu in Berlin, G-Star in Pattaya, SOS Supper Club in Bali and NLO in Minsk. Shared bills with Roger Sanchez, David Morales, Ralph Falcon, Sander Kleinenberg, Harry Choo Choo Romero, Justin Berkmann and Funk D'Void reflect the level at which he has operated throughout.
Together with Stefano Ugliano, known as 6884, he formed Bicycle Corporation in 2009, a project that landed with 17:44 Records and has since placed output on Alchemy, Miniatures, WL77, GrooveTraxx, Suka and Revox. That catalogue now runs to over fifty tracks and remixes, with the earliest recordings made accessible through Bandcamp.
Marco remains based in Taipei, playing regularly across South East Asia and growing a network of artists and collaborators throughout the region. Bookings go through our DJ agency, and updates appear on his Facebook page.
Marco Mei's 2021 Podcast 26 opens with SuperMariotte's Backprop on Clafoutis Records, the French producer's Electronica and House Music hybrid setting a warm tone before Guydee's Svet develops the deeper direction. Palmiara's Surfin in Gerd Janson's Acid Tribe Balearic Full Moon Mix introduces a Balearic and acid-inflected quality before Natema's Ven (Ahora Sí) and Vega and Romero's El Ritmo bring an Afro House and Latin House energy to the podcast's early stages.
Belcampo's Delisei on Camp01 and Fast Trak's Hooked carry the set through Deep House and House territory before Air Jackson's Chemistry and Mr. G's Learn.2.Love from Unreleased Gemz Vol.3 sustain the deeper direction. Cayam's Chaos In The Distance — Cayam being the alias of Maya Jane Coles — then introduces a Melodic House and Techno quality before Demou's Sing Your Praises returns from an earlier Marco Mei podcast.
Eli Escobar's Can't Stop Dancing in the Matt Jones Rework and Jamie 326's Rebound carry the set through Nu Disco and House territory. Leiba's Unforgettable Day and Kiu D's Dynamite from the Vinyl Sampler sustain the House direction before Johannes Albert's Covered Call and an unknown artist's Eykkdarmx on Remi001 shift into a slightly more Minimal register.
Uniile's This Must Be Illegal provides a Tech House moment before Thomas Bangalter's On Da Rocks on Roulé arrives as one of the podcast's most historically significant selections. The 1995 French House and Jackin House track from the Daft Punk member's solo imprint is a genuine piece of genre history. Its jacking groove and raw club energy sit in deliberate contrast to the more contemporary selections surrounding it.
Sylvester's Living For The City in a Tribute To Martin Luther King Jr. Edit then delivers one of the podcast's most culturally charged moments, the late San Francisco vocalist's gospel-house vision given a tribute framing that connects the gay liberation and civil rights movements within the same track. DJ Deeon and Ghettoblaster's Need A Freak follows with a Jackin House and Chicago House energy before Mr. Diamond's Dance With Me and Anzu's Alone Together from Street Tracks carry the set into Soulful House and Organic House territory.
Marco Faraone's Want Me provides a Tech House and Techno anchor before Lil Mo Yin Yang's Reach in the Kenny Dope Remix delivers a Classic House moment rooted in the New York underground tradition. Black Market Dance Club's Redface in the Serge Santiago UK Edit closes the episode on a House and Tech House note. Marco Mei's 2021 Podcast 26 is a wide-ranging piece of programming that covers House, Deep House, Afro House and Balearic across a tracklist that draws freely from multiple eras and sensibilities with characteristic confidence.
