Marco Mei has published the tracklist for episode 5 of 2021, broadcast on Saturday, the 30th of January. Scientific Sound Asia is an English-language electronic music radio station, DJ agency, music news outlet and events promoter specialising in electronic music across Asia, with audiences in Japan, China, Thailand, Taiwan, Korea, Sri Lanka and beyond.
Marco Mei is an Italian DJ and producer with over three decades of experience. His background in afrobeat, funk, disco and early electronic music laid the groundwork for a career that has taken him to clubs and festivals across the globe since the early 1990s.
A residency at Pacha Club in Sharm-El-Sheikh marked an early international step, followed by appearances at Woo Bar, Fuse in Brussels, Room 18 in Taipei, Bangaluu in Berlin, G-Star in Pattaya, SOS Supper Club in Bali and NLO in Minsk. Over the years he has shared bills with Roger Sanchez, David Morales, Ralph Falcon, Sander Kleinenberg, Harry Choo Choo Romero, Justin Berkmann and Funk D'Void among others.
In 2009 he formed Bicycle Corporation with Stefano Ugliano, known as 6884, a production project built around house and techno. Signed to 17:44 Records, their catalogue spans labels including Alchemy, Miniatures, WL77, GrooveTraxx, Suka and Revox, with over fifty tracks and remixes drawing support from Sneak, Mauro Picotto, Dubfire, Axwell, Danny Tenaglia and Above and Beyond.
Based in Taipei, his party Ciao Taipei helped embed him in the local scene and expand his network across South East Asia. He is available for bookings through the Scientific Sound Asia radio station and DJ agency. Follow him on Facebook.
Marco Mei's show from 30th January 2021 opens with Salt City Orchestra's The Book, its Soulful House warmth setting the tone immediately. Themba and Thakzin's Sound Of Freedom on Armada Music follows, the Afro House qualities of that track providing a rhythmic contrast before Yulia Niko and Bombossa Brothers' La Playita featuring Totó La Momposina on Get Physical introduces a Deep House warmth rooted in Colombian folkloric vocal tradition.
Alex Niggemann's Technology in the Fabrizio Mammarella Remix on Aeon and Jansons and Liz Cass's Less Ordinary carry the set into Tech House territory before Mark Broom's Hear Me pushes further into Techno. Dennis Ferrer and Disciples's Whisper featuring James Yuill brings the set back to Soulful House before Jaden Thompson's Closer sustains the deeper direction.
Duran Duran's Air Race in the Jose Nunez Main Mix arrives as a Nu Disco edit of the 1984 track, Marco Mei's taste for recontextualising non-electronic source material within a House Music framework evident once again. Anfisa Letyago's So Good on Intec then shifts the energy decisively, the Carl Cox-endorsed Techno track sitting as the set's most direct and driving moment.
Super Flu and Angelov's Erq on Monaberry and Yeröm's Anomaly in the Remotion Remix carry the set back through Deep House and Tech House before Radio Slave's Killer in the Attack Ships On Fire Remix provides a second Techno peak. Kozo's See A Man About A Horse, and Logic1000's Like My Way follow before Mr. Fingers's Nyte Light arrives as a classic Chicago Deep House selection, the Larry Heard track grounding the set in the genre's foundational history.
Oliver Deutschmann's Wach in the Marus Remix and Roman Flügel's Outro continue the Tech House direction before Personify's You Can Be a Star and Roy Ayers's Runnin Away in the Personify Edit shift the mood, the latter a Disco and Funk rework of the jazz vibraphonist's 1978 track. Stefano Mango's The Storm and The O'Jays' Darlin' Darlin' Baby in the Pete Maxey Rework sustain the Disco and Soulful House direction through the later stages.
Jessie Ware's Running in the Disclosure VIP 2021 Remix and Joey Negro (Sessomatto) Vs Pete Heller's I Need Big Love carry the set towards its close, the latter a long-standing figure in British House music whose presence here sits naturally within the show's broader groove-led aesthetic. TGW's Fighter and DJ Dep's We Lost Music on Transmit Recordings close the episode, rounding off a show that covered more genre ground than any of the previous three January 2021 Marco Mei episodes.
The 30th January show is Marco Mei at his most eclectic, moving between Afro House, Chicago Deep House, Techno and Disco with a confidence that suggests a DJ as comfortable in the archive as he is in the contemporary underground.
