Disc jockey duo Many Hands (Berlin & UK) have published their playlist for Basement Soul episode 52 on Scientific Sound Asia. The platform operates as an Asian electronic music radio station, DJ agency and promoter, while also publishing music news and connecting audiences across the region and internationally.
Many Hands is the collaboration between Jona Jefferies and Kava, two selectors known for their wide-ranging and eclectic approach to music. Their sessions reflect a fusion of styles shaped by years of experience across underground scenes in Europe and beyond.
Jona Jefferies was born in Barcelona and raised between Spain and the United Kingdom, beginning his journey as a DJ within the free party and rave event scene in the South West of England during the early 1990s. This formative period, rooted in sound system culture and underground events, laid the foundation for his musical direction.
Following this, he spent time in Ibiza, where he absorbed Balearic influences, adding a more open and melodic dimension to his selections. His connection to the island continues to inform his style, both as a DJ and as a listener.
Jona later moved to Bristol, where the city’s strong sound system culture and independent mindset helped him refine his craft. After building a presence in Berlin’s underground circuit and performing across the city, he returned to the United Kingdom in 2020 while maintaining close ties to the international scene.
His production work reflects this broad musical background. Releases such as Lost In Paradise and California Sunrise... Do You Remember? on Apersonal Music combine Deep House, Balearic and Indie Dance elements, with remixes from artists including Max Essa and Eddie C.
More recent material, including Es Camp and its reinterpretations, continues this direction with a focus on slower tempos, melodic structure and atmosphere. His work has gained support from respected selectors such as Gilles Peterson, Mala and Laurent Garnier, reinforcing his presence within the underground community.
Kava, originally from New Zealand, brings his own diverse background shaped by Wellington’s music scene, where Soul, Hip Hop, Disco, House, Techno and Drum and Bass all played a role. His experience in vinyl culture and radio, including time on the Berlin Community Radio station, contributes to the duo’s broad and informed approach.
The two connected in Berlin near OYE Records, where their shared outlook led to the formation of Many Hands and the Basement Soul concept. Rooted in intimate sessions and vinyl culture, the project focuses on deep, groove-led selections across Disco, Soul, Afrobeat, House and beyond.
Jona J and Kava perform across a wide rhythmic and harmonic spectrum, blending organic and electronic elements with a focus on dancefloor energy. Basement Soul episode 52 continues this ethos, delivering a fluid and carefully curated session that reflects their commitment to underground music and musical exploration.
Many Hands Basement Soul 52 opens with Yasushi Ide’s Galactic Beats Part 2, blending Jazz-Funk and Free Jazz elements before Jayda G and Laylay introduce a more rhythmic House groove with Monroe Bumpa. Kat 7 and Flashbaxx continue the progression, moving from Bass-driven club energy into smoother Nu Disco territory with Brooklyn Love Boat.
A shift in tone follows as Miss Kaninna brings a Hip Hop edge with Blak Britney, while North Satellite and Reuben Vaun Smith explore deeper Soul textures through Love Is On The One and Mali. The Cosmologist expands the palette further with Afrobeat and Leftfield Disco influences, maintaining an eclectic flow.
The middle section leans into Broken Beat and deeper club sounds as Awanto 3’s The Lime King introduces a rhythmic shift. Dimitri From Paris and Chatobaron bring a refined House and Disco fusion with Chez Madame La Baronne, before DJ Nature adds a soulful Deep House touch with It’s Up To You.
African Disco and Funk influences come through strongly with Mpharanyana and The Peddlers, while Tonica and Dominante maintain the groove with Tigre. Ten City’s Be Free adds a classic vocal House moment, leading into Hudson People’s Trip To Your Mind, which reinforces the Disco and Funk foundations.
The later stages deepen the Broken Beat direction with Stefano De Santis and Sci-Clone, where Sick With Rhyme and 1980 One bring a jazz-influenced rhythmic structure. Piers Kirwan and Marcus McGowan introduce Bass and Tech House elements, adding variation without disrupting the overall flow.
The closing stretch moves into more atmospheric territory as John Rocca’s I Want It To Be Real brings classic House energy, followed by Jona Jefferies’ Lost In Paradise, which blends Deep House with Balearic and Ambient influences. Two Thou, Aka Kelzz and Santiago Salazar round off the set with Electronic Soul and Electronica, closing a diverse and globally influenced session.
