Disc jockey duo Many Hands (Berlin & UK) return with the playlist for Basement Soul episode 48. Broadcast on Scientific Sound Asia, the show continues to serve expatriates and local listeners across Asia and worldwide with deep-rooted underground selections.

Many Hands is the musical partnership of Jona J and Kava, two DJs united by a shared curiosity for rhythm, texture and dancefloor culture. Born in Barcelona and raised between Spain and the UK, Jona Jefferies began DJing in the early 1990s within the free party and rave movement of Southwest England.

A later move to Ibiza immersed him in Balearic sounds and open-minded club culture, influences that continue to shape his approach as both raver and selector. Following his time on the island, Jona relocated to Bristol, where the city’s sound system culture and inner-city mindset helped refine his craft.

After several years embedded in Berlin’s international scene, performing across a wide range of venues, he returned to the UK in 2020. One of his standout releases, Nocturnal, produced with Lewis Hopkin of Stardelta Mastering under the alias Sapience for Tom Middleton’s Sound Of The Cosmos label, received support and airplay from Gilles Peterson, Mala and Laurent Garnier.

Kava, originally from New Zealand, has been based in Berlin for over a decade. His musical foundations were shaped in Wellington, surrounded by soul, bashment, hip hop, disco, house, techno and drum and bass. Before moving to Europe, he worked in vinyl retail and hosted multiple radio shows across New Zealand, developing a deep understanding of music from both a selector and a curator’s perspective.

After settling in Berlin, Kava became a long-running resident on the now-defunct Berlin Community Radio, co-hosting Float Some and Jet Some with Rodi Kirk of Scratch 22 fame. Alongside radio work, he performed extensively across the German capital, further embedding himself in the city’s underground network.

Jona and Kava met through a mutual connection near OYE Records in Berlin and quickly recognised a natural musical chemistry. That connection evolved into Many Hands, and eventually Basement Soul, an eclectic, dance-focused session born in a Berlin basement and shaped by a shared love of late-night energy and heavy sound systems.

Across their sets, Many Hands move fluidly through disco, soul, Latin and Afrobeat, blending MPC-driven rhythms, drum machines, Jamaican influences from New York, West African synth textures and leftfield European flavours. Sometimes quirky, sometimes heavy, but always grounded in movement, their selections are made for dancers first.

Record collectors and musical investigators at heart, Jona J and Kava are children of the 80s with a deep nocturnal education, drawn to dark rooms and bass-rich systems. Basement Soul is a shared journey through global rhythms, and episode 48 continues that tradition with warmth, depth and dancefloor intent.

The opening stretch of the episode sets a reflective tone, with Culross Close’s To Belong establishing a broken beat and nu-jazz foundation that flows naturally into the jazz-fusion rhythms of Viejas Raíces and the instrumental warmth of J Dilla’s People. Kendrick Lamar’s The Heart Part 5 adds a moment of introspection, grounding the early section in conscious hip-hop before the music drifts gently towards more melodic territory.

As the mix unfolds, Balearic and boogie influences begin to surface. Trujillo’s L0v3 and Boy Dude’s Cosmic Lines bring a sun-soaked, soulful ease, while Omar S’s What’s Good For The Goose anchors the journey firmly in Detroit house tradition. Dwele’s Atjazz remix adds a smooth, soulful house touch, followed by disco-leaning and chuggy underground energy through Addison Groove and DJ Nature’s rework for Unkle.

The middle section leans deeper into cosmic and dub-inflected moods. Wrekin Havoc’s One Love and Paprika Soul’s Come With Me explore Balearic textures, while Daniel Maunick’s Dirty Trix and Remnants Of Joy reconnect the mix to deep house and broken beat roots. Idjut Boys and Palms Trax provide left-of-centre dancefloor flavour before the selection slips into heavier dub territory with Gaoulé Mizik and Nicolajev.

Closing out the episode, the focus shifts towards jazz, reggae and soul influences. Airto Moreira and Flora Purim’s Partido Alto and Jana Koubkova’s Nijana bring rich Latin and Afro-jazz elements, while Horace Andy’s Safe From Harm and Sonia’s Easier To Love round things off with warm reggae tones. Episode 48 concludes as a cohesive journey through house, broken beat, Balearic, jazz and soul, staying true to the deep, open-minded spirit of Basement Soul.
