Disc jockey duo Many Hands (Berlin & UK) have published their playlist for Basement Soul episode 51. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian underground electronic music station, DJ agency and promoter for expatriate and local audiences across the region and internationally.

Many Hands is the collaborative project of musically inquisitive and wide-ranging DJs Jona J and Kava. Jona, whose real name is Jona Jefferies, was born in Barcelona and raised between Spain and the UK. He began his journey as a disc jockey in the flourishing free party and rave scene of southwest England in the early 1990s.

After relocating to Ibiza, he was captivated by its Balearic sound and hedonistic spirit, an influence that has remained central to his musical identity ever since, both as a raver and as a DJ. Following his time in Ibiza, Jona moved to Bristol, often referred to as Bass City, shaped by its inner-city mindset and deep-rooted sound system culture.

He spent several years there honing his craft before later becoming a respected presence within Berlin’s growing international underground music community. After performing across a wide range of venues throughout the German capital, he returned to the United Kingdom in 2020 while maintaining strong ties to Berlin.

Jona’s release Nocturnal, created alongside his long-time collaborator Lewis Hopkin under the alias Sapience for Tom Middleton’s Sound Of The Cosmos label, gained significant recognition and radio play from influential selectors including Gilles Peterson, Mala and Laurent Garnier.

Originally from New Zealand, Kava has now lived in Berlin for over ten years. His musical upbringing was shaped by the vibrant Wellington scene, where he absorbed influences spanning Soul, Bashment, Hip Hop, Disco, House, Techno and Drum and Bass. In New Zealand, he worked in vinyl retail and hosted radio shows on several stations, experiences that helped refine his ear and broaden his musical perspective.

After moving to Berlin, Kava became a resident on the now-defunct monthly radio show Float Some and Jet Some alongside Rodi Kirk of Scratch 22, broadcast via Berlin Community Radio. Alongside this, he performed regularly across the city at a wide variety of venues, establishing himself within the local underground scene.

Jona and Kava first connected through a mutual friend near OYE Records in Berlin and immediately recognised a strong musical alignment. This meeting led to the formation of Many Hands and the creation of Basement Soul, an eclectic, immersive and dancefloor-driven session originally hosted in a basement setting in the heart of Berlin.

Jona J and Kava move freely across a broad rhythmic and harmonic spectrum. Disco, Soul, Latin and Afrobeat sit comfortably alongside drum machines, MPCs, Jamaican sound system influences, West African synth traditions and European funk textures. Their sound can be quirky, sometimes raw, but always centred around the dancefloor.

Many Hands are dedicated vinyl diggers and music researchers, shaped by late-night culture and heavy sound systems. As children of the 1980s with a strong nocturnal education, they naturally gravitate toward dark basements and deep grooves. It is Basement Soul, and the journey is shared by everyone.

Many Hands Basement Soul 51 opens in a grounded, rhythmic space where Reggae, Soul and Electronic tones sit side by side. Midnight sets a late-night mood, while 333 and Synthesizer Voice bring dubby electronics into the groove. Down By The Rio shifts the feel toward a loose Balearic pulse before Pambelé introduces Afrobeat movement that carries naturally into the more dance-floor leaning Get Down.

The middle section blends club and street influences. Spacetalk leans into an Indie Dance aesthetic, followed by the hybrid energy of Aint It True. Tracks like Resistors Dream and Zemidjan pull the set toward Disco, Soul and Latin-tinged rhythms, while Tamba deepens the atmosphere with an Electronic Dub texture. Doin’ It and Terrorize My Heart keep the focus on funk and groove.

From here, the session moves firmly into house territory. Money adds a Deep Soulful House feel, followed by the smoother Deep House flow of Unification Vibration. The mood becomes more leftfield with Keep It Together and Room 1, two pieces that sit between house and experimentation, before Remember When anchors things in classic Detroit House.

The final stretch widens the palette again. In The Neighbourhood blends House with Pop Rap sensibilities, while Wildflower returns to deeper textures. Afro-rooted pieces like Ebunya and Giya bring electronic jazz flavours, balanced by the alternative edge of Quiet On The Set. The set closes with La Fluté Enchantée, Work It Out, and We Are The Mothers Of The World, finishing on a reflective blend of Electronic Bass, Deep House and spiritually minded Reggae and Soul.
