Many Hands unveil the playlist for episode 59 of Basement Soul, continuing their ongoing series on Scientific Sound Asia. The platform operates as an Asian underground electronic music radio station, promoter and DJ agency, connecting local and international scenes through carefully curated broadcasts.
Originally formed by DJs Jona J and Kava, Many Hands brings together backgrounds rooted in New Zealand, the UK and mainland Europe. Now based in Berlin, the duo draws on decades of involvement in underground music culture, shaping a sound that prioritises warmth, groove and musical curiosity.
Jona J, born in Barcelona and raised between Spain and the UK, began his DJ journey in the early 1990s within the UK’s free party and rave scene in the southwest. His path later led him to Ibiza, where Balearic influences and club culture left a lasting imprint, before relocating to Bristol.
There, he refined his craft within the city’s sound system-driven underground before eventually moving to Berlin, becoming a regular presence across its club landscape. In 2020, he returned to the UK while continuing to develop his production work, including the release of Nocturnal under the Sapience alias with Lewis Hopkin on Tom Middleton’s Sound Of The Cosmos label.
Kava, originally from New Zealand, has spent over a decade based in Berlin. His musical foundations were formed in Wellington, where he immersed himself in Soul, Bashment, Hip Hop, Disco, House, Techno and Drum and Bass.
Alongside DJing, he was active in record distribution and radio broadcasting across New Zealand. After relocating to Berlin, he became a regular contributor to Float Some and Jet Some, a monthly show hosted by Rodi Kirk, while building a reputation through performances across the city.
The two first connected through mutual circles around Berlin’s OYE Records, discovering a shared appreciation for wide-ranging musical influences. This meeting led to the formation of Many Hands and the creation of Basement Soul, an event series rooted in intimate underground spaces, originally hosted in a small basement venue in central Berlin.
Basement Soul reflects the duo’s collective approach. Their sets move fluidly through Disco, Soul, Latin and Afro-influenced sounds, often incorporating live elements such as drum machines and MPCs.
Drawing inspiration from Jamaican artists in New York, West African electronic pioneers and European funk collectors. Many Hands balance playfulness with purpose, blending offbeat selections and rhythmic experimentation while keeping the dancefloor firmly in mind.
Episode 59 continues that ethos, presenting a warm, groove-led journey that reflects the duo’s shared history and evolving musical perspective, firmly grounded in underground club culture and the spirit of Basement Soul on Scientific Sound Asia.
The opening section sets a reflective tone, moving from Lady Blackbird’s Collage in Greg Foat’s jazz-soul reinterpretation into UK Bass and Breakbeat selections from Obelix and EVM128. Early Hip Hop and Deep House moments add contrast, keeping the focus on groove and rhythm rather than peak-time structures.
The mix then leans deeper into Dub and Roots Reggae, with Chant Of Freedom, Rasta Business and Jah New Garden Dub providing spacious low-end pressure and steady pacing. These tracks establish a grounded mid-section where rhythm and atmosphere take priority.
House and Broken Beat elements are introduced gradually through Zombie Dawn, Ge-Ology’s Nomadic Discorientation and Tom Manzarek’s Side Eye. Jazzy Deep House and Afro-influenced rhythms sit naturally alongside Broken Beat textures, maintaining a cohesive flow across styles.
The closing stretch blends Disco-leaning selections with Psychedelic Dub and Deep House, including Trip To Your Mind and Autumn’s Song. The episode concludes with Breakbeat-driven material, rounding out a set that moves fluidly across Deep House, Dub, Breakbeat, and related underground forms without breaking its narrative.
Be sure to tune in live on Friday, January 23, 2026, from 8 PM to 10 PM Indochina Time (ICT). Don't miss the re-airing on Tuesday from 8 AM to 10 AM (ICT).
