The Funk Sessions have submitted the playlists for their second show on Scientific Sound Asia, featuring Ego Warrior and Robson Jr. The platform operates as an underground electronic music radio station for the Asian region and international audiences, alongside its work as a DJ agency, promoter and music news outlet.
Since 2019, The Funk Sessions crew have been bringing funk-focused party energy to dancefloors across Saigon. Their sound moves through Funk classics, Old Skool Hip Hop, Disco, Party Breaks, Ghetto Funk and other groove-heavy styles.
The collective brings together international DJs from Australia and the United Kingdom, with members based mainly in Vietnam. Their background spans club nights, free parties and festivals, alongside support slots for recognised names from the underground music circuit.
Their musical identity is strongly influenced by the pioneers of Breakbeat. That influence is clear in their Hip Hop, Funky Breaks and Ghetto Funk selections, while also running through the wider structure of their mixes.
The Funk Sessions have held regular events in Ho Chi Minh City at Broma Not A Bar, TNR, Indika and Apt852. Past and present venues also include Secret Weekend, Tempo, Arcan, Haus, Banana Mama, Piu Piu, Sky 9, Rogue Saigon, Soma and Saigon Outcast.
This second edition brings Ego Warrior and Robson Jr. to the station with another selection shaped by Funk, Breaks, Hip Hop, Disco and global groove influences. The show builds on the crew’s Saigon event background while keeping the focus on party-led rhythm and underground club energy.
The Funk Sessions episode 2 features Ego Warrior and Robson Jr, with the programme built around Funk, Breakbeat, Soul, Jazz Music and Latin Music. Ego Warrior opens with a selection rooted in 1970s funk, rare groove and psychedelic rhythm, adding newer edits and reworks that connect older records to contemporary club culture.
Shawn Lee’s Ping Pong Orchestra begins the first selection with Techstar Intro, setting up a break-led opening before Deodato’s Also Sprach Zarathustra brings Jazz Music into the mix. The second Techstar Intro passage keeps the cinematic tone in place before The Undisputed Truth move the set into funk and psychedelic soul with Space Machine.
Billy Cobham’s Stratus adds another jazz-funk reference, bringing one of the most recognisable drum and bassline-led tracks in the first hour. Minnie Riperton’s Reasons then moves into Soul before Chocolate Milk and Maxayn return the selection to heavier 1970s funk.
The Lafayette Afro Rock Band’s Darkest Light gives Ego Warrior’s hour a major breakbeat source, with the group noted for funk recordings that later became important to Hip Hop sampling culture. Dan Boardi and The African Internationals then introduce Afrobeat with Money Is The Root Of Evil, widening the sound through African rhythm and horn-led movement.
Sound Experience’s Devil With The Bust and Cymande’s Dove close Ego Warrior’s selection with Funk and rare groove weight. The first section is thoughtful and purposeful, moving through psychedelic soul, jazz-funk, Afrobeat and deep 1970s groove without losing its central funk character.
Robson Jr. follows with War (Bang Bang) by Kaloo, moving the programme into Breakbeat and edit-driven club material. Moody Sanchez, Michael Lerner and Proleter then reshape older soul, jazz and popular song sources into rhythm-led tracks built for the breaks circuit.
Savages Y Suefo’s Ballroom Breakers in Fab Samperi’s Deep Bossa Remix brings Latin Music into Robson Jr.’s section. Michael Lerner’s Cinema Muto vs Cypress Hill and Fugees then adds a Hip Hop reference before DJ Neber returns to Latin rhythm with Camino.
Etta James and Otis Redding bring Soul into the middle of Robson Jr.’s selection through funk and breaks edits of classic vocal material. DJ Maars, DJ Twister and Badboe then shift the hour between Breakbeat, Reggae and Funk, with A Message To You Cutty adding a clear Reggae link.
DJ Tzinas and Mrbigk, Fatboy Slim and Beats International push the selection into heavier breaks and festival-ready edits. Sandy Balls’ Superman brings Breaks into the late section before Mooqee closes Robson Jr.’s part with Supacat Police, connecting bass, funk and breakbeat energy.
Traks, Chris Awesome, Jimi Hendrix and Beastie Boys close the episode with Funk, Breakbeat and remix culture. The Funk Sessions episode 2 ends as a broad celebration of breaks, soul, funk and classic source material, with Ego Warrior and Robson Jr. linking 1970s groove, Latin rhythm, reggae, Hip Hop and modern party breaks.
