DJ Loxley returns with a new edition of his Drum & Bass series, The Deeper Shades episode 11, broadcast on Scientific Sound Asia. The station continues its role as a radio platform, promoter and DJ agency connecting underground electronic music scenes across Asia and internationally.

Originally from Nottingham, DJ Loxley came of age during the UK’s 1990s rave explosion. Immersed in hardcore and jungle mixtapes, pirate radio and the raw energy of underground parties, this formative period laid the foundations for his long-standing relationship with drum and bass culture.

Early inspiration came from influential figures such as DJ Seduction, DJ Hype, Mickey Finn and Grooverider, whose sounds helped anchor his taste firmly within jungle and the evolving drum and bass movement. BBC Radio 1’s One in the Jungle, presented by Fabio and Grooverider, proved especially influential, revealing the genre’s emotional depth, rhythmic complexity and uncompromising dancefloor power.

While studying at university, Loxley broadened his musical outlook through UK Garage and began performing vinyl-only DJ sets. A weekly residency on Sheffield Live community radio became a vital creative outlet, allowing him to sharpen his technical skills, explore deeper musical territories and develop a more personal voice as a selector.

After a period away from music, a Marcus Intalex mix in 2012 reignited his passion, drawing him back into record collecting and the more expressive, soulful side of drum and bass. Artists such as Calibre, Intalex, Fabio and Marky became key reference points during this renewed phase, reinforcing his connection to the sound that first inspired him.

Now based in Asia, where he has spent nearly two decades between Thailand and Vietnam, DJ Loxley brings a measured and thoughtful approach to drum and bass. His selections move fluidly between deep and atmospheric cuts, warm soulful rollers and uplifting melodic tracks, blending the heritage of UK drum and bass with the perspective of a global underground scene.

The episode opens with a refined sense of space and mood, drawing the listener into deep and atmospheric territory through tracks like Bella Forte, Scorpio, and Take It Ezz. Subtle percussion, restrained basslines, and carefully layered textures set the tone, reflecting DJ Loxley’s signature focus on depth and detail rather than immediacy.

As the mix develops, the energy tightens with weightier selections such as Too Late, Tribal Flow, and Dusty Noise. These tracks bring a darker, more physical presence, balancing minimalism with low-end impact while maintaining the hypnotic flow that defines the deeper side of Drum and Bass.

The middle section leans into classic autonomic and leftfield influences, with tracks like Point Of Reference, Pink Feather, and Letter From Detroit introducing rolling rhythms and atmospheric tension. This stretch of the mix highlights a strong connection between modern production and the genre’s foundational sounds.

In the final stages, DJ Loxley closes with a powerful run of heavyweight selections, including Mek Quake, How You Make Me Feel, and July. The ending ties together deep, minimal, and dark Drum and Bass with a sense of continuity and respect for the genre’s lineage, making this episode a focused and immersive journey through the deeper shades of Drum and Bass.

Tune in to the live broadcast on Thursday, January 8th, from 8 PM to 10 PM Indochina Time (ICT). A replay will be available on Monday from 8 AM to 10 AM (ICT).
