Scientific Sound Asia presents a new edition of Velvety Elements, hosted by Portuguese DJ and producer Joshua. Staying true to the station’s mission of connecting underground artists across Asia and beyond, the series continues to spotlight house music shaped by soul, groove and emotional depth.

Based in Évora, Portugal, Joshua has been immersed in electronic music culture since the 1990s. His extensive collection of vinyl, cassettes, CDs and digital releases reflects decades of dedication to the underground. While his musical path has explored techno, drum and bass and chillout, house music has always remained at the core of his artistic identity.

During quieter periods for Portugal’s underground scene, Joshua played an active role in keeping it alive by organising events and encouraging collaboration among DJs and producers. After stepping away to focus on family life, he returned with renewed clarity, launching Floating Beats, recognised for its melodic and forward-thinking direction, followed by Velvety Elements, a series devoted to deeper, warmer and more soulful expressions of house.

Working under several aliases including K Joshua, Joshua Marian, Joshua Fernand and Joshua Onairam, he continues to explore different creative perspectives. Each project reflects a distinct facet of his sound, ranging from rhythm-focused minimalism to emotionally driven melodic writing. In 2024, he founded JFLM Recordings, a label created to release his own productions while supporting underground artists who value authenticity, depth and musical identity.

Joshua’s recent output highlights a period of strong artistic momentum. Under the Joshua Marian name, his 2024 Nobody Waiting For Me EP on Back to the Beat delivered the organ-led Nobody Waiting For Me alongside the nostalgic tones of I Love You, both rooted in classic house traditions.

Follow-up releases such as Just Love and Chance With Soul expanded this palette further, blending groove with emotional nuance. In 2025, his K Joshua single Light of Faith introduced a more introspective approach, pairing deep house rhythms with melodic phrasing that balances reflection and forward movement.

Through Velvety Elements, Joshua continues to articulate the essence of his musical vision. Each episode unfolds as a warm, flowing journey, weaving rhythm and harmony into an experience that honours the enduring soul of house music.

Velvety Elements 296 opens with warm, deep-rooted House foundations, setting a reflective tone through Amor Unico by Kevin Yost and the late-night glow of Morning Light. These tracks immediately anchor the session in classic Deep House aesthetics, where subtle swing, melody and atmosphere take precedence over excess.

As the mix develops, DJ Joshua leans into unmistakable House anthems that shaped dancefloors across decades. Danny Tenaglia’s remix of Y? and the enduring groove of Been a Long Time bring forward that unmistakable New York club energy, balancing raw rhythm with soulful uplift and long-form progression.

Midway through, timeless vocal hooks and playful club attitude come into focus. People Are Still Having Sex and Bonus Odds & Sods inject character and personality, while Love Trap and Yes Sewer That’s My Baby reinforce the underground lineage that defines classic House culture.

Closing the session, DJ Joshua delivers pure dancefloor heritage. Tribe of The Night and Dream Drums round out the mix with percussive drive and hypnotic repetition, leaving the listener firmly rooted in House music’s golden era. Velvety Elements 296 stands as a respectful and carefully curated tribute to the classics that continue to inspire today’s underground.

Be sure to tune in to his live radio show on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, from 6 to 8 p.m. Indochina Time (ICT). If you miss it, you can catch the replay on Friday from 6 to 8 a.m. (ICT).
