Scientific Sound Asia presents a new edition of Velvety Elements, hosted by Portuguese DJ and producer Joshua. Staying true to the station’s mission of connecting underground artists across Asia and beyond, the series continues to highlight house music driven by soul, groove and emotional depth.
Based in Évora, Portugal, Joshua has been immersed in electronic music culture since the 1990s. His extensive collection of vinyl, cassettes, CDs and digital releases reflects decades of dedication to the underground. While his musical path has explored techno, drum and bass and chillout, house music has always remained at the core of his artistic identity.
During quieter periods for Portugal’s underground scene, Joshua played an active role in keeping it alive by organising events and fostering collaboration among DJs and producers. After stepping away to focus on family life, he returned with renewed clarity, launching Floating Beats, known for its melodic and forward-thinking direction, followed by Velvety Elements, a series devoted to deeper, warmer and more soulful strands of house.
Working under several aliases including K Joshua, Joshua Marian, Joshua Fernand and Joshua Onairam, he continues to explore different creative perspectives. Each project reflects a distinct aspect of his sound, from rhythm-focused minimalism to emotionally driven melodic writing. In 2024, he founded JFLM Recordings, a label created to release his own productions while supporting underground artists who value authenticity, depth and musical identity.
Joshua’s recent output highlights a period of strong artistic momentum. Under the Joshua Marian name, his 2024 Nobody Waiting For Me EP on Back to the Beat delivered the organ-led Nobody Waiting For Me alongside the nostalgic tones of I Love You, both rooted in classic house traditions.
Follow-up releases such as Just Love and Chance With Soul expanded this palette, blending groove with emotional nuance. In 2025, his K Joshua single Light of Faith introduced a more introspective approach, pairing deep house rhythms with melodic phrasing that balances reflection and movement.
Through Velvety Elements, Joshua continues to articulate the essence of his musical vision. Each episode is shaped as a warm, flowing journey, weaving rhythm and harmony into an experience that honours the enduring soul of house music.
Velvety Elements 295 opens with a smooth and understated tone, setting the mood through the dubby warmth of The One (The Dub) and the cosmic glide of Celestial Bean. These early selections lean into deep house’s introspective side, where space, groove and subtle rhythm take priority, allowing the mix to breathe and unfold naturally.
As the set progresses, deeper emotional layers emerge through tracks such as Super Hero and After Care, where soulful chords and Detroit-influenced sensibilities bring a human touch to the groove. Cable Guy and Stitch continue this journey, locking into hypnotic rhythms that balance underground grit with refined musicality.
Midway through the episode, the energy gently lifts with Thriller and Beat Azul, introducing a more direct house feel while retaining the show’s signature depth. Lionized and Dub My Soul reinforce this flow, blending rolling basslines with understated percussion that keeps the momentum steady and engaging.
The closing stretch is reflective and immersive, with Fragment of The Mind and Breeze guiding the mix toward a calm yet confident finish. Velvety Elements 295 captures the essence of deep house and house music at its most timeless, showcasing DJ Joshua’s ability to craft a seamless, late-night journey rooted in groove, atmosphere and soul.
