Scientific Sound Asia presents a new edition of Velvety Elements, hosted by Portuguese DJ and producer Joshua. Staying true to the station’s mission of connecting underground artists across Asia and beyond, the series continues to highlight house music at its most soulful, groove-centred and emotionally expressive.

Based in Évora, Portugal, Joshua has been immersed in electronic music since the 1990s. His extensive collection of vinyl, cassettes, CDs and digital releases reflects decades of dedication to underground culture. Although his journey has explored techno, drum and bass and chillout, house music has always remained at the core of his artistic identity.

During quieter phases for Portugal’s underground movement, Joshua supported the community by organising events and encouraging collaboration among DJs and producers. After stepping away briefly to focus on family life, he returned with renewed purpose, launching Floating Beats, known for its melodic and immersive direction, followed by Velvety Elements, a series dedicated to deeper, warmer and more soulful shades of house.

Working under several aliases, including K Joshua, Joshua Marian, Joshua Fernand and Joshua Onairam, he continues to explore new creative angles. Each moniker reflects a different facet of his sound, from percussive minimalism to emotive melodic storytelling. In 2024 he founded JFLM Recordings, a label created to showcase both his own productions and underground artists who share his passion for authenticity, texture and depth.

Joshua’s recent releases highlight a period of strong creative focus. As Joshua Marian, his 2024 Nobody Waiting For Me EP on Back to the Beat delivers the organ-driven title track alongside the nostalgic I Love You, both shaped by classic house character. Tracks such as Just Love and Chance With Soul continue this theme, blending groove with emotional nuance, while his 2025 K Joshua single Light of Faith introduces a more introspective tone. Built on deep house rhythm and melodic phrasing, it balances reflection with forward motion.

Through Velvety Elements, Joshua continues to refine and express the essence of his musical vision. Each episode brings together rhythm, harmony and emotion in a warm, flowing journey that celebrates the timeless soul of house music.

Joshua shapes the opening mood with the warm and expressive depth of I Just Want U 2 Kno before Animist shifts the tone with the sharper Jackin House bounce of Smirnoff. Alton Miller adds a classic soulful lift through Can’t Master, balancing groove and melody early in the mix. Damian Rausch follows with How We Do It, easing the set back into a deeper and more understated flow.

DJ Pipe continues this mood with Whirl Dee, its rolling patterns clearing space for the smoother textures of Fred P’s Water Melon. Milton Jackson adds a more detailed rhythmic character through Grand Entry, blending tightly with Tuccillo’s 2D Music which reinforces the deeper energy Joshua leans toward in this episode.

Bress Underground brings a brighter House accent with Fever before Joshua reintroduces a deeper palette through DJ Sneak’s What You Expecting From Me. Franck Roger’s That’s Alright adds warmth and late-night charm, gently stretching the mood toward its conclusion. G-Falex rounds off the journey with Lemonade For Gods, a rich and atmospheric closer that settles the session on a contemplative note.

This instalment highlights Joshua’s skill for building smooth transitions within Deep House while weaving in touches of House and Jackin House, creating an inviting flow that moves confidently from groove to melody and back again.
