Scientific Sound Asia presents the latest edition of Velvety Elements, hosted by Portuguese DJ and producer Joshua. Staying true to the station’s mission of connecting underground artists across Asia and beyond, the series continues to spotlight house music at its most soulful, groove-centred and emotionally expressive.

Based in Évora, Portugal, Joshua has been deeply immersed in electronic music since the 1990s. His extensive archive of vinyl, cassettes, CDs and digital releases reflects decades of dedication and an enduring commitment to underground culture. While his musical journey has explored techno, drum and bass and chillout, house music has always remained the heart of his craft.

Throughout quieter periods for Portugal’s underground movement, Joshua helped sustain the scene by organising events and encouraging collaboration among DJs and producers. After taking time away to focus on family, he returned with renewed purpose, launching Floating Beats, celebrated for its melodic and immersive direction, followed by Velvety Elements, a series devoted to deeper, warmer and more soulful strands of house.

Working under several aliases, K Joshua, Joshua Marian, Joshua Fernand and Joshua Onairam, he continues to expand his artistic identity. Each project highlights a different facet of his sound, from percussive minimalism to emotive melodic journeys. In 2024, he founded JFLM Recordings, a label built to showcase both his own productions and select underground artists who share his passion for authenticity, texture and depth.

Joshua’s recent output marks a period of strong creative momentum. As Joshua Marian, his Nobody Waiting For Me EP on Back to the Beat in late 2024 features the organ-rich title track and the nostalgic I Love You, both steeped in classic house sensibility.

Releases such as Just Love and Chance With Soul demonstrate his natural ability to blend groove with emotional detail, while his 2025 K Joshua single Light of Faith introduces a more introspective tone. Built on deep house rhythm and melodic phrasing, it reflects a balance of reflection and forward motion.

Through Velvety Elements, Joshua continues to refine and express the essence of his musical identity. Each episode merges rhythm, harmony and emotion into a warm, flowing experience that honours the timeless soul of house music.

Velvety Elements 291 opens with a calm and polished tone as DJ Joshua sets the mood through warm Deep House selections. Open Your Eyes and Feel The G introduce a gentle flow, letting the deeper chords settle before the rhythm becomes more defined. The sequence continues with Saturday Afternoon and Too Much Info, both adding rounded low-end and soft movement that build the early atmosphere with subtle control.

The middle stretch deepens further with Fred P’s Water Melon, giving the mix a reflective centre before shifting into House textures with Culture (Dub) and Back To Roots. These tracks bring a more classic energy, adding lift without disrupting the smooth direction of the set. As the groove develops, Blue and NY Nights introduce a slightly heavier pulse while keeping the warm tone intact.

The progression then returns fully to Deep House with Back and Bouncing Dance, adding spacious chords and an understated drive that carries the mix into its final phase. DJ Joshua maintains the clean and unhurried feel, allowing each transition to settle naturally while still giving the set forward momentum.

The journey closes with the melodic glow of The Night, rounding out the mix with a soft and satisfying finish. Velvety Elements 291 stands as another refined session from DJ Joshua, offering a cohesive blend of Deep House and House shaped for smooth evening listening.

Be sure to tune in to his live radio show on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, from 6 to 8 p.m. Indochina Time (ICT). If you miss it, the replay will be available on Friday from 6 to 8 a.m. (ICT).
