Scientific Sound Asia presents the newest edition of Velvety Elements, hosted by Portuguese DJ and producer Joshua. As part of the station’s mission to connect underground artists across Asia and beyond, the series focuses on house music in its most soulful, groove-driven forms.
Based in Évora, Portugal, Joshua has been active in electronic music since the 1990s. His extensive archive of vinyl, cassettes, CDs, and digital releases reflects decades of dedication to sound and to preserving underground culture. While his career has spanned techno, drum and bass, and chillout, house has always been at the heart of his creative vision.
During quieter years for Portugal’s underground movement, Joshua organised grassroots events and encouraged collaboration across the scene. After stepping back to focus on family, he returned with fresh energy, launching Floating Beats, recognised for its melodic and immersive selections, and later Velvety Elements, which highlights deeper, soulful strands of house.
Working under aliases such as K-Joshua, Joshua Marian, Joshua Fernand, and Joshua Onairam, he explores a range of styles, from minimal and percussive grooves to rich melodic journeys. In 2024, he founded JFLM Recordings, a label designed to showcase his productions alongside carefully chosen works from rising talents, with an emphasis on deep, emotionally resonant house.
His most recent house-leaning tracks include the Nobody Waiting For Me EP as Joshua Marian on Back to the Beat in late 2024, which featured the organ-driven Nobody Waiting For Me and the nostalgic house cut I Love You. Other highlights include Just Love and Chance With Soul, both released under Joshua Marian, adding soulful and uplifting tones to his catalogue.
Through Velvety Elements, Joshua continues to define his own approach while building a worldwide audience. Each show captures the richness and variety of house, offering listeners an authentic and soulful experience week after week.
Velvety Elements 281 opens with D’Julz’s Nudeep and Alton Miller’s Afrika Alright, both firmly rooted in deep house. The warm basslines and fluid percussion highlight the soulful character of deep house music. Workerz changes the energy with Work With Me, introducing house with a more driving and direct groove before David Aurel’s High In The Sky returns to deep house with its floating, immersive textures.
DJ Feevos’ Beat Azul in a Manuel Kane remix and DJ Steaw’s N Hancock St keep the deep house focus with rolling basslines and warm pads. G-Falex’s Lemonade For Gods continues the vibe, layering hypnotic chords over subtle rhythms. Louie Gomez’s Disco adds a house feel that blends classic inspiration with contemporary production, while Andre Butano’s Libertinaje brings in tech house elements for added intensity.
Danny Howells’ Thrunk shifts back into house with a distinctive melodic character, providing an anchor between classic and modern club sounds. PXRKX & Nitro Station’s 90’s Sunshine continues in the house tradition, blending nostalgic flair with a fresh groove. Xander Seddon closes the episode with Circular Motion, returning to deep house with reflective tones that round off the set on a contemplative note.
Velvety Elements 281 showcases DJ Joshua’s deep connection to underground sounds. From deep house songs rich with atmosphere to house music artists like Danny Howells and Louie Gomez, and the subtle drive of tech house DJs such as Andre Butano, this mix balances groove, depth, and emotion. It is a session crafted for lovers of deep house music, house music DJs, and the wider electronic underground.
