Scientific Sound Asia presents the newest edition of Velvety Elements, hosted by Portuguese DJ and producer Joshua. As part of the station’s mission to connect underground artists across Asia and beyond, the series focuses on house music in its most soulful, groove-driven forms.
Based in Évora, Portugal, Joshua has been active in electronic music since the 1990s. His extensive archive of vinyl, cassettes, CDs, and digital releases reflects decades of dedication to sound and to preserving underground culture. While his career has spanned techno, drum and bass, and chillout, house has always been at the heart of his creative vision.
During quieter years for Portugal’s underground movement, Joshua organised grassroots events and encouraged collaboration across the scene. After stepping back to focus on family, he returned with fresh energy, launching Floating Beats, recognised for its melodic and immersive selections, and later Velvety Elements, which highlights deeper, soulful strands of house.
Working under aliases such as K-Joshua, Joshua Marian, Joshua Fernand, and Joshua Onairam, he explores everything from minimal and percussive grooves to rich melodic journeys. In 2024, he founded JFLM Recordings, a label designed to showcase his productions alongside carefully chosen works from rising talents, with an emphasis on deep, emotionally resonant house.
Through Velvety Elements, Joshua continues to define his own approach while building a worldwide audience. Each show captures the richness and variety of house, offering listeners an authentic and soulful experience week after week.
Velvety Elements 280 begins with DJ Aakmael’s Track 166 and Somersault’s Olly, setting a classic deep house foundation. Joselacruz’s You Can Be adds a vocal touch, while Milton Jackson’s Soul Delay layers grooves and melodic textures. Yass and The Checkup’s Feel It, remixed by Franck Roger, keeps the soulful thread alive, and Ricky Razu’s Alive enhances the deep and uplifting flow.
The set shifts with Crackazat’s What You’re Feeling, bringing modern nu disco vibrancy. Nenad J.’s Eivissa Breeze returns to deep house with a breezy, summery tone. Nick Curly’s Sway injects a house groove, keeping the energy flowing with crisp percussive rhythm.
DJ Vibe’s We Can broadens the range with afro house percussion and soulful vocals, bringing global flavour into the set. Steffen Deux’s Nine builds momentum through crisp tech house, before Okain’s Midnight Feed strips the sound down with a minimal deep tech approach.
Closing with Steve O’Sullivan and Ben Buitendijk’s Take It, the episode ties back to deep house roots, fusing groove with subtle layering. Velvety Elements 280 stands as another seamless mix by DJ Joshua, weaving deep house, afro house, tech house, minimal deep tech, disco, and house into a smooth evening journey.
Be sure to tune in to his live radio show on Tuesday, September 16th, 2025, from 6 to 8 p.m. Indochina Time (ICT). If you miss it, you can listen to the replay on Friday from 6 to 8 a.m. (ICT).
