Scientific Sound Asia has unveiled the latest playlist for a new edition of Velvety Elements, the radio series curated by Portuguese DJ and producer Joshua. As a respected platform for electronic music, event organiser, and DJ agency, Scientific Sound Asia continues to champion underground talent across Asia and beyond.
Based in Évora, Portugal, DJ Joshua has been active in the electronic music scene since the 1990s. His vast collection, spanning vinyl, cassettes, CDs, and digital formats, reflects a deep-rooted passion for sound. While he has explored genres such as Techno, Drum and Bass, and Chillout, House music has consistently remained at the heart of his creative focus.
During a time when Portugal’s underground scene faced cultural and structural challenges, Joshua played an important role in sustaining its momentum. He supported the scene through organising events, fostering collaborations, and contributing to local initiatives that helped shape a lasting community around House and Techno.
After taking a break to focus on family life, Joshua returned with renewed artistic drive. He launched Floating Beats, a show focused on melodic and immersive selections, followed by Velvety Elements, which highlights smoother and groove-based styles of House music.
Using a range of aliases including K-Joshua, Joshua Marian, Joshua Fernand, and Joshua Onairam, he explores different aspects of his musical identity, from minimalistic structures to soulful and rhythmic expressions. In early 2024, he founded JFLM Recordings, a label that provides a home for his work and supports artists who share his commitment to emotionally rich and refined House music.
Velvety Elements 272 opens with Dub Afrika by Alton Miller, a warm, earthy start rooted in traditional Deep House Music with afro-infused textures. Mr. Stee’s Daydream continues the mellow flow with rich chords and a dreamy bounce. Black Eyes adds a dose of funk and groove on Blue Grooves, signalling a short shift into soulful House.
Alex V’s I Feel It and Franck Roger’s Can U Believe push the set deeper into classic Deep House with hypnotic loops and lush pads. Kevin Yost’s Indignation intensifies the depth with percussive complexity and jazz-tinged progressions. DJ Joshua’s track Voices of Help glides into this portion seamlessly, contributing his signature melancholic yet uplifting touch.
In the later stretch, Zoo Brazil’s It’s You and Fragoso’s Clear Vision lean into brighter House tones with melodic flair. Alex Phratz drops A Groove Thing, bridging rhythm-driven House with a smoother touch. Danny Howells’s Powershow (Payback Dub) offers a playful, dubbed-out rhythm, adding a unique twist to the flow.
The set winds down with DJ Sneak’s Dirty Jazz, whose dusty kicks and jazzy samples close the episode with raw Deep House energy. Velvety Elements 272 is a journey through some of the finest deep house music, blending soulful textures and classic rhythms with modern craftsmanship.
Remember to tune into his live radio show on Tuesday, July 22nd, 2025, from 6 to 8 p.m. Indochina Time (ICT). If you miss the live broadcast, you can catch the replay on Friday from 6 to 8 a.m. (ICT).
