Scientific Sound Asia has just released the playlist for the latest episode of DJ Joshua’s long-running radio series, Velvety Elements. Now in its 264th edition, the show continues to reflect the station’s commitment to nurturing Asia’s thriving electronic music culture through its work as a respected radio platform, event organiser, and DJ agency.

DJ Joshua, originally from Évora, Portugal, has spent decades immersed in the electronic music world. His wide-ranging collection of digital recordings, vinyl, CDs, and cassettes underscores a deep and enduring dedication to sound. While his experience spans genres such as Techno, Drum and Bass, and Chillout, it’s House music that has consistently remained the backbone of his creative output.

During the 1990s, when Portugal’s underground music scene faced social resistance and logistical obstacles, Joshua continued to support the movement by organising events, collaborating with other artists, and finding new ways to share music. His efforts helped shape a local culture rooted in House and Techno that persists.

After stepping back from live shows to focus on family life, Joshua returned to music with renewed energy, launching his Floating Beats radio show, a platform for deep and melodic electronic sounds. This revival also gave birth to Velvety Elements, a second programme that delves into the more elegant and groove-oriented end of the House music spectrum.

Using various production aliases such as K-Joshua, Joshua Marian, Joshua Fernand, and Joshua Onairam, he explores a spectrum of House music styles with distinct creative identities. His label, JFLM Recordings, founded in January 2024, further supports this exploration by offering a space for his own releases and those of like-minded artists.

This week’s edition, Episode 264, leans towards Dub Techno, delivering textured, hypnotic rhythms layered with subtle melodic elements. The episode highlights Joshua’s ability to craft immersive atmospheres that draw listeners in with their emotional warmth and sonic depth. Alongside Dub Techno, the show also touches on Deep House, Deep Tech, and raw, minimal Techno, genres that Joshua blends seamlessly with his refined touch.

Velvety Elements 264 unfolds as a meticulously curated journey through the depths of Dub Techno and its adjacent genres. The episode commences with Francesco Tamburrano's "Libellula" (Alexander Bogdanov Remix), setting a serene tone with its layered textures.

K-Joshua's own "Calculate Fast" (Lotech Hijack Repurposed Mix) follows, infusing a rhythmic complexity that captivates the listener. Amaral Borges' "Tulips and Seashells" introduces a melodic warmth, seamlessly transitioning into Gonzalo Villarreal's "Curanto," which adds a percussive depth to the mix.

K-Joshua returns with "Deep Vanity Well," a track that delves into introspective sounds. The collaboration between Sasse & Klas Lindblad on "Gamla Stan" brings a classic Deep House vibe, enriching the auditory palette. Pedro Capelossi & Aeikus' "Chasing Ghosts" adds a hauntingly beautiful layer, leading into Spigl's "HZP," which offers a raw, hypnotic techno experience.

Pablo Bolivar's "Ocarina" (Stelios Vassiloudis Remix) introduces a deep tech groove, maintaining the episode's immersive quality. Mr. G's "Consequences" injects a classic house rhythm, and Nicolas Barnes' "Situation" concludes the set with a reflective dub techno ambience.

Velvety Elements 264 is a testament to DJ Joshua’s continued evolution as a curator and producer. By favouring the introspective pull of Dub Techno while maintaining the programme’s trademark smoothness, he offers yet another rich and emotive journey through the deeper shades of electronic music.

Remember to tune in to his live radio show on Tuesday, May 27th, 2025, from 6 to 8 p.m. Indochina Time (ICT). If you can't catch it, the replay will be accessible on Friday from 6 to 8 a.m. (ICT).
