Scientific Sound Asia has unveiled the latest playlists for DJ Joshua's radio show, Velvety Elements episode 252. Recognised as a pivotal force in the Asian electronic music landscape, Scientific Sound Asia operates as a radio station, promoter, and DJ agency, playing a crucial role in the evolution of the electronic music community in Asia.
Originating from Évora, Portugal, DJ Joshua has made a significant impact in the electronic music community, with a career defined by enthusiasm, resilience, and a continually expanding repertoire of genres. His vast collection of digital files, vinyl records, CDs, and cassettes reflects his unwavering dedication to electronic music, enabling him to explore a broad spectrum of sounds.
Throughout his career, despite achieving success across multiple genres such as Techno, Drum and Bass, and Chillout, House music has consistently remained at the heart of his artistic identity. During the challenges encountered by the rave scene in Portugal during the 1990s, Joshua remained steadfast, finding innovative methods to share and distribute his music.
Through collaborations with fellow artists and hosting events at clubs and bars, he fostered environments where House and Techno enthusiasts could unite, significantly extending his influence beyond his immediate surroundings. After taking a step back to focus on his family following the birth of his child, Joshua rediscovered his passion for DJing as his daughter matured, leading to the inception of the Floating Beats radio show.
Floating Beats offered him a platform to delve into a diverse array of electronic music, blending progressive, melodic, and deeper techno-infused sounds. However, his enduring love for House music motivated him to establish a second show: Velvety Elements.
Velvety Elements enables DJ Joshua to explore the softer, more refined aspects of House music, merging warm rhythms, soulful melodies, and intricate layering to create an elegant listening experience. The show centres on deep, smooth, and emotionally resonant tracks, designed to envelop listeners in a luxurious and sophisticated atmosphere, showcasing his precision as a selector and his intuitive skill in harmonising melodies.
By employing various aliases, including K-Joshua, Joshua Marian, Joshua Fernand, and Joshua Onairam, he broadens his creative scope by exploring different styles of House music. In January 2024, he launched JFLM Recordings, a label he established to highlight his production work and provide a platform for his artistic vision. Velvety Elements signifies another chapter in his ongoing musical journey, guiding listeners through an elegant exploration of House music’s most sophisticated and enchanting sounds.
Velvety Elements 252 by DJ Joshua opens with a deep and immersive vibe, as Nico Rothmann’s “Disappear” sets the tone with its lush, soulful Deep House rhythm. The mix quickly builds momentum with Mc4len’s “Belo Nepara,” a heartfelt tribute that resonates with emotional depth and groove.
As the journey unfolds, Oscar Holgado’s “18 There Is No Time (Dontknower Remix)” and Franck Roger’s “Radik'Hall” deliver a cascade of intricate beats and hypnotic basslines, perfectly embodying the essence of Deep House. A sudden burst of retro flavor arrives with Bruxas’ “Mas Profundo (Sakr Remix),” injecting a Nu Disco and Disco energy that bridges classic and modern sounds.
The set continues its exploration of sonic textures with standout cuts from Kevin Yost & Peter Funk’s “Home Front Drama” and Andrea Deppieri’s “Pills,” seamlessly transitioning between deep, reflective grooves and more uplifting House elements. Tracks like Manuel Kane’s “Ready to Thrive” and Felipe Gordon’s “The Punk Automata” further reinforce the mix’s rich, velvety character, while Sapurra’s “Back Then (Vox Mix)” and Magnetic Family’s “North Circular” add layers of rhythmic complexity.
Concluding the journey, DJ Sneak’s Classic House track “Turbulence” delivers a powerful final statement, blending House energy with smooth, understated grooves. Velvety Elements 252 is a masterfully curated set that invites you to lose yourself in a world of deep, soulful rhythms and vibrant musical textures.
