Scientific Sound Asia presents the latest instalment of Floating Beats, episode 702, hosted by Portuguese DJ and producer Joshua. As one of Asia’s leading platforms for underground electronic music, DJ talent, and live events, Scientific Sound Asia continues to showcase innovative voices from across the global scene.

Originally from Évora, Portugal, Joshua has been a passionate figure in electronic music since the mid-1990s. His wide-ranging collection, spanning vinyl, cassette, CD, and digital formats, demonstrates a deep commitment to sound, format, and the preservation of underground culture across eras.

His musical journey has taken him through styles such as House, Techno, Drum and Bass, and Chillout. Even as the Portuguese rave movement began to fade in the late '90s, Joshua remained active in the scene, organising grassroots events and collaborating with fellow DJs and producers to keep the underground spirit alive.

After stepping back for a time to focus on family life, he re-emerged with a renewed creative energy. With his daughter older, Joshua launched Floating Beats, a podcast and radio show that marked his return to the decks and to broadcasting.

In 2023, he began releasing original productions under various aliases, including K-Joshua, Joshua Marian, Joshua Fernand, and Joshua Onairam, each moniker representing a different facet of his musical identity, from melodic expressions to stripped-down, experimental sounds.

The momentum continued into 2024 with the launch of JFLM Recordings, his own label created to house his multifaceted productions. The imprint also serves as a space for innovative electronic music, further solidifying Joshua’s position in today’s global underground scene.

Floating Beats 702 begins with Hugo Rolan’s Mind Design, delivering a driving Techno (Peak Time) punch to set the tone. The pace quickly shifts with Sr2’s Cognitive Dissonance, an Electronica track whose glitchy detailing and experimental flair stand out as an early curveball. It creates a cerebral transition before the mix settles deeply into hypnotic territory.

The core of the set enters a rich Raw / Deep / Hypnotic Techno flow with Klint’s The Mess and DIT ZY’s Horror Vacui, both offering layered intensity and sonic darkness. These are followed by Arma’s Modern Ate and Marçal’s Covenant, where tight, rolling percussion and evolving textures define the hypnotic depth. These selections embody the best of deep techno music, inviting full immersion.

Midway through the session, tracks like Benjamin Mull’s Weather Down and Dave Davis’s More Element 25 (Hard To Tell Remix) enhance the moody, warehouse feel. Kid93’s Machine Soul and Cristian Varela’s AC Operation bring added grit, pushing the sound into rawer terrain. These are standout examples of techno’s underground edge, reflecting what many techno DJs consider peak material for extended sets.

Closing out with Procombo’s Darker Echoes and Vinicius Honorio’s Take As Gospel, the energy remains unwaveringly hypnotic. Joshua Fernand’s own track Windy Storm introduces subtle dub techno nuances while maintaining rhythmic propulsion. Oscar Mulero’s La Loma wraps the episode in precision and depth, a masterclass in hypnotic techno. Fans of techno music, particularly raw and driving styles, will find this episode essential listening.
