Scientific Sound Asia has released the latest playlist for Floating Beats Episode 698, presented by Portuguese DJ and producer Joshua. As an established platform for electronic music, a DJ agency, and an event organiser, Scientific Sound Asia continues to promote underground culture across Asia and internationally.
Joshua, who is based in Évora, Portugal, has been involved in the electronic music scene since the mid-1990s. His personal collection spans vinyl, cassette tapes, CDs, and digital formats, reflecting a deep and long-standing passion for music in all its forms.
Throughout his career, Joshua has explored a wide variety of genres, including House, Techno, Drum and Bass, and Chillout. Even during the decline of Portugal’s rave movement in the late 1990s, he remained connected to the underground scene by organising small events and collaborating with like-minded artists, contributing to its continued development at grassroots level.
After taking time away from live performance and broadcasting to focus on family life, Joshua later returned to music with renewed energy. As his daughter grew older, he launched Floating Beats, a radio show and podcast that became a vehicle for his revitalised artistic direction.
In 2023, Joshua began releasing original productions under a range of aliases, including K-Joshua, Joshua Marian, Joshua Fernand, and Joshua Onairam. Each moniker represents a distinct facet of his creative output, from melodic and emotive works to minimal and experimental sounds.
The following year, he established JFLM Recordings, a label created to support his growing catalogue and evolving artistic vision. JFLM not only serves as a home for his own productions but also provides a platform for pushing forward-thinking music, allowing Joshua to maintain an influential presence within the international electronic music community.
Floating Beats 698 begins with the immersive and raw minimalism of Dial (Off/Grid Remix) by William Arist, establishing a hypnotic tone. John Wick's Actives and Santiago Krenz's Swing De Sangre follow seamlessly, each contributing tense, driving atmospheres marked by pulsing rhythms and subtle industrial undercurrents.
Mid-set highlights include Fabio Florido's Circuits and Lumertz's Unblocked, pushing forward with persistent low-end pressure and layered, modular textures. A.Paul's Prevalent and Lindsey Herbert's Incoming Signal continue the ascent with escalating urgency and sonic density, sustaining a deep and forceful Techno flow.
Later in the mix, Luke Hess's Woodward Ave (VIL Remix) brings in dub-inspired depth while DJ Dextro’s Coconuts Groove tightens the energy with its muscular groove. DJ Deep’s Stressed momentarily shifts the gear into peak-time intensity, providing a sharp contrast before the final hypnotic plunge resumes.
The closing sequence stays true to the show’s deep focus. HERS & JXXXO’s Tarnishing Devastating and DJ Sodeyama’s Scottie wrap the journey in spiralling, murky sound design. User Frndly’s 003 finishes the set with understated menace, maintaining the hypnotic tension to the last beat.
