Bicycle Corporation introduce guest DJ Murphy Kin, also known as DJ Lucy, for a new edition of their Roots show. Broadcast on Scientific Sound Asia, the series continues the station’s mission as an Asian electronic music platform connecting underground artists and listeners across the region and internationally.

Bicycle Corporation is the long-running Italian collaboration between DJ and producer Marco Mei and classically trained musician Stefano Ugliano, better known as 6884. Together, they have built a catalogue spanning more than three decades, with releases across house and techno that balance club functionality with strong musical foundations.

Marco began his journey in the early 1990s within Italy’s emerging underground scene. As a founding member of the Urban People collective, he organised events across the country that helped introduce forward-thinking house and techno to new audiences. His growing reputation led to a residency at Pacha, which became a turning point in his career, opening the door to international bookings and establishing him as a respected selector far beyond Italy.

Raised in Torino, Stefano showed a natural affinity for music from an early age. He studied classical piano, percussion and drums, developing a deep appreciation for both European composition, particularly the works of Chopin, and the rhythmic traditions of West African djembe. This diverse musical grounding later became a defining feature of his production style.

Despite his classical background, it was the image of the DJ performing and shaping the atmosphere of a room that truly captivated Stefano. At a time when electronic music was rarely heard on Italian radio, the idea of creating and sharing those sounds felt both radical and irresistible. That curiosity, combined with Marco’s club experience and shared vision, led to the formation of Bicycle Corporation, a project rooted in experimentation, persistence and a genuine love for underground culture.

This week’s guest DJ is Murphy Kin, also known as DJ Lucy. Never content with standing still, DJ Lucy is driven by constant curiosity and a deep desire to discover new sounds. With a background rooted in the film industry, his approach to DJing and music production is expansive and free from limitation, treating sound as a narrative rather than a fixed structure.

Listening to a DJ Lucy set often feels like watching a film unfold. His music rises and falls with intention, avoiding predictable formulas or a comfortable 4/4 path at a fixed tempo. Rather than pushing straight towards a peak, he prefers a slow and deliberate build, guiding the listener through atmosphere and emotion. His selections can move from romantic rock and classic old-school influences to flirtatious R&B, before evolving into disco, indie, rock and dance-driven moments.

His ability to shape mood and tension gives each performance a cinematic quality, drawing the audience into a scene before reaching a carefully timed climax. Naturally positive and energetic, DJ Lucy possesses an exceptionally wide musical vocabulary. He moves fluidly between genres, switching rhythm and texture to capture emotion, drawing from house, hip hop, rock, punk, indie rock and jazz with ease.

As the driving force behind Ting Ting Disco, DJ Lucy has been instrumental in presenting standout parties across bars, pubs, clubs and alternative venues in both Taipei and Shanghai since 2015. From 2017 onwards, the project expanded further, touring other cities across China and continuing into wider parts of Asia, steadily building a strong regional presence.

In 2021, Ting Ting Disco evolved beyond events, placing greater focus on releasing music online. By curating and integrating productions from around the world, the platform aims to offer listeners a broader and more diverse musical experience.

When performing live, DJ Lucy remains refreshingly unscripted. His sets are shaped by the room, the crowd and the moment itself, yet at times he commands the space with the confidence of a film director guiding a scene. It is this balance between instinct and control that defines his sound and makes each performance feel unique.
