Bicycle Corporation introduced guest DJ Bert Bevans for his next 'Roots' show. Scientific Sound Asia is the online Asian electronic music station DJ agency and promoter for the region with an international outreach.
Bicycle Corporation is an Italian duo of the DJ and producer Marco Mei plus the skilled Stefano Ugliano aka 6884. As a duo, they have amassed well over 50 remixes and original tracks across the House Music and Techno spectrum.
During the early 1990s, Marco embarked on his musical career as a DJ and producer, organizing House Music and Techno events under the name 'Urban People' across Italy. His success with this collective led to him gaining recognition and securing a residency at Pacha in Egypt. This opportunity opened doors for international DJ bookings, marking the beginning of his global musical journey.
Growing up in Torino, Italy, Stefano showed remarkable musical talent from a young age. He pursued classical piano, percussion, and drums with intense dedication, adoring his Chopins and West African Djembes. Yet, it was the image of 'the DJ performing on stage' that increasingly captivated the young Stefano.
He pondered whether the elusive electronic beats, once a rarity on Italian radio stations in the '90s, would mark the beginning of a new chapter in his life. This led to the creation of the Bicycle Corporation. The group has recently released a Hard Techno remix of Virus D.D.D's track "Origination," which has been selected for Beatport's staff picks, and it is indeed an impressive track.
Guest DJ Bert Bevans.
The guest for this week is Bert Bevans, a British Honduras-born DJ who began his career by performing at "Block Parties" in Hollis, New York, before moving on to iconic NYC venues like Studio 54, Paradise Garage, Xenon, Electric Circus, Bonds, and the Playboy Club. His family relocated to New York on July 27th, 1969, settling in Jamaica, Queens, and later moving to Hollis, Queens, where he spent his teenage years.
Following his school hours, he pursued aviation studies, but he did not complete his education. He revealed to me personally: "If I had completed my studies, I would have been obligated to serve in Vietnam, so I decided to leave. However, my passion for flying remains strong." Consequently, transitioning to becoming a DJ seemed like a logical step for him. His DJ journey began with hosting block parties in Hollis and gradually evolved from there.
Although he had never intended to become a DJ, his time at Melody's Record Shop led to many of New York's DJs visiting to acquire the most recent music releases. Impressed by him, they started inviting him to their clubs, and the rest, as they say, is history!
Studio 54, the most renowned club of all time, opened its doors in New York in April 1977. Bert soon performed at his initial private event in the club, marking the first of many appearances at '54'.
Richie Kaczor, the DJ from Studio 54, was assigned to launch a new '54' in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. Following this, he was recruited to inaugurate another '54' in Barcelona, Spain. Upon departing from St. Thomas, Richie entrusted him with the residency of Studio 54 in the Virgin Islands.
Following a two-year stint in the Virgin Islands, he returned to New York and was promptly offered a residency by Steven Hatter at his club 'The Embassy' in London, UK. This opportunity paved the way for another residency at the trendy new London venue, Xenon. He seamlessly integrated into the London club scene, performing at Camden Palace, a nightclub co-owned by Rusty Egan and Steve Strange [of Visage], where he shared the DJ booth with Colin Favor and "Evil" Eddie Richards.
For several years, Bevans travelled extensively between London, New York, and various cities worldwide. In 1991, he reunited with his old friend Justin Berkmann, who was constructing a "Paradise Garage type sound system" for a new club in London. Set to open in September, this club was none other than the Ministry of Sound. He continues to travel widely, performing at diverse venues and nightspots worldwide. Over the past few years, he has contributed to the development of "Seduction" in Phuket and recently finalized an agreement with Café del Mar in Ibiza. Additionally, prior to the pandemic, he was instrumental in launching the Ice and Spice Bar in Ho Chi Minh City.
This month's show features the genres House, Disco, Afro House, Nu Disco, Deep House, R&B, Soul, and Latin House with tracks by Michael Jackson, David Morales, Frankie Knuckles, and more.
