Bicycle Corporation introduce guest DJ Bert Bevans for their next Roots show. Scientific Sound Asia is the online Asian electronic music station for the region with an international outreach.

Bicycle Corporation is the Italian duo formed by DJ and producer Marco Mei alongside the talented Stefano Ugliano, also known as 6884. In the early nineties, Marco began his musical path as both a DJ and producer.

He began organising nights across Italy under the collective name Urban People. This project gained significant momentum, earning him a residency at Pacha and opening the door to international bookings that set him on a global musical journey.

Raised in Torino, Stefano showed a remarkable aptitude for music from a young age. He studied classical piano, percussion and drums with passion, admiring the works of Chopin while being drawn to the energy of West African djembe rhythms.

Yet it was the sight of DJs commanding a crowd from the booth that increasingly captivated him. The challenge of finding electronic music on Italian radio in the nineties only intensified his curiosity, eventually leading him to embrace DJing and production fully. From this shared passion, Bicycle Corporation was born.

The duo continue to evolve creatively, and their recent Hard Techno remix of Virus D.D.D’s Origination has gained notable traction, appearing in Beatport’s staff picks and receiving strong support for its powerful, driving character.

This week’s guest is Bert Bevans, a British Honduras–born DJ whose career began with the early “block parties” of Hollis, New York, before progressing to some of the most iconic clubs in New York City, including Studio 54, Paradise Garage, Xenon, Electric Circus, Bonds and the Playboy Club.

His family immigrated to New York in July 1969, settling first in Jamaica, Queens, before moving to Hollis during his teenage years. After school, he studied aviation, though he ultimately chose not to complete the programme. As he often explains, “If I had graduated, I would have had to go to Vietnam, so I left. I still love flying.” Becoming a DJ was never something he planned, yet it unfolded naturally.

Bert began by playing local block parties, and while working at Melody’s Record Shop, he found himself surrounded by many of New York’s leading DJs who would drop by to collect new releases. They recognised his musical touch, invited him into their club booths, and from there, his career moved quickly.

In April 1977, Studio 54 opened its doors and soon became the most famous nightclub in the world. It didn’t take long before Bert played his first private party there. When resident DJ Richie Kaczor was sent to open a Studio 54 in St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands, and later another in Barcelona, he handed over the Virgin Islands residency to Bert. After two successful years in the Caribbean, Bert returned to New York before receiving an offer from Steven Hatter to take up a residency at The Embassy in London.

This marked the beginning of his imprint on the London club scene. He went on to play at the newly launched Xenon, followed by sets at Camden Palace, owned by Rusty Egan and Steve Strange of Visage. There, he performed alongside influential figures such as Colin Favour and “Evil” Eddie Richards.

Throughout the late eighties and early nineties, Bert split his time between London, New York and numerous international bookings. In 1991, he reconnected with longtime friend Justin Berkmann, who at the time was building a new club with a sound system inspired by Paradise Garage. That venue became Ministry of Sound, and Bert was part of its formative chapter.

Bert continues to travel extensively, performing at venues and festivals across the world. In recent years, he has assisted Santeri in developing Seduction in Phuket, worked with Café del Mar Ibiza, and contributed to the launch of Ice and Spice Bar in Ho Chi Minh City. His monthly show presents an expertly selected blend of Classic House, Deep House, Tech House and Soulful House, reflecting both his heritage and his ongoing influence on global club culture.

The mix opens with a warm, soulful touch as She Can Make Me Dance sets a lively and heartfelt tone, followed by the uplifting rhythms of Levando A Vida, which brings an Afro-influenced pulse into the early flow. The classic feel of My Piece Of Heaven adds nostalgic richness, and Caught in the Middle glides in with Roger Sanchez’s unmistakable polish, widening the emotional palette. Thinking About Your Love continues the vocal focus, weaving modern production with timeless soul elements before Feelin’ Feelin’ lifts the momentum further.

Midway through, the energy deepens with the smooth groove of I Can’t Get You Out Of My Mind and the irresistible disco flair of Don’t You Want My Love. Byron Stingily’s powerful presence on We Belong Together adds a gospel inspired drive, followed by Still Here, which blends emotion with bold dancefloor structure. David Morales’ vocal craft stands out on And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going, carrying the mix into a dramatic and expressive peak.

The final stretch introduces a colourful blend of vocal house and disco-infused rhythms. Tracks like Don’t Leave Me This Way and Everything I Do maintain the soulful intensity, while Another Day In My Life brings Louie Vega’s signature swing to the forefront. The groove tightens with Waiting before Everyday of My Life brings one last surge of joyous vocal house energy.

The mix closes with Magic, a Roy Davis Jr rework that eases the set into a deep, elegant finish.

Across the full session, Bert Bevans honours the spirit of soulful and disco house while celebrating Roots’ milestone 100th episode, blending timeless dance music heritage with uplifting modern selections.
