Disc jockey duo Many Hands (Berlin/UK) have released the playlist for Basement Soul episode 47. Scientific Sound Asia is the Asian electronic music station, DJ agency and promoter serving both expatriates and locals across the region and worldwide.

Many Hands is the creative partnership of musically immersed DJs Jona J and Kava. Barcelona-born and UK-raised, Jona Jefferies first stepped behind the decks in the early nineties during the free party and rave movement in the Southwest of England. A move to Ibiza soon followed, where he absorbed the island’s Balearic spirit and its hedonistic, open-minded approach to club culture.

His journey then took him to Bristol, where the city’s Bass culture and Sound System heritage left a deep imprint on his style. Years later, after finding a strong footing in Berlin’s international scene and performing widely across the city, he returned to the UK in 2020. One of his standout releases, Nocturnal, created with Lewis Hopkin of Stardelta Mastering under the alias Sapience for Tom Middleton’s Sound of the Cosmos, received support from Gilles Peterson, Mala and Laurent Garnier.

Kava, originally from New Zealand, has called Berlin home for more than a decade. His musical roots were shaped in Wellington’s rich and eclectic scene, surrounded by Soul, Bashment, Hip Hop, Disco, House, Techno and Drum & Bass. Before relocating to Europe, he worked in vinyl retail and hosted numerous radio shows across New Zealand. In Berlin, he became a long-running resident on the former Berlin Community Radio with Rodi Kirk (Scratch 22), and has played extensively throughout the city.

The duo met near OYE Records in Berlin through a mutual friend and immediately recognised a natural synergy. From that connection came Many Hands, a dance-driven, mood-lifting, basement-born session at the heart of Berlin’s underground, which later evolved into their Basement Soul series.

Across the rhythmic landscape, Jona J and Kava blend Disco, Soul, Latin and Afrobeat with MPC-crafted beats, Jamaican influences, West African synth explorations and left-field European oddities. Their selections may shift from quirky to heavy, but the intention remains constant: music for dancers, delivered with depth and character.

The episode opens with warm Soul and Funk textures as Kool and The Gang set the tone, followed by the soft Quiet Storm mood of Funny How Time Flies. Jazz rap colours enter through Coolie High, balanced by the G-Funk instrumental of The Message. Broken Beat influences surface early as Team Dynamite’s collaboration with Bailey Wiley adds fluidity to the mix, while the Boogie touch of Missenetta moves things into richer analogue grooves.

Soul Disco warmth spreads through James Mason and Jogada before shifting back toward hip hop roots with the bongo-driven dub of Stetsasonic. Loose Ends glide the mix into UK Soul territory. A turn toward Deep House and Boogie arrives through Space Ghost’s Deep blend, then Mtume strengthens the 80s Funk thread. Dego’s Broken Beat shuffle and Biggabush’s Dub textures widen the rhythmic palette while maintaining a soulful undercurrent throughout.

A global rhythm shift follows with DJ Python’s deep reggaeton pulse and Alex Nut’s amapiano-infused rework of Wildside. The mix then locks into UK Garage and UK Funky accents through Coach Leo and Cooly G before Paula Tape’s Eclipse moves into leftfield house space. Julien Dyne adds another dose of Broken Beat energy, while Mystic Jungle pushes the set into Boogie and Italo flavours.

The final stretch turns emotive and uplifting. Romie Singh introduces a Balearic softness before RSD, and Denise Morgan closes on a high with soulful house rhythms in Let’s Stay Together. Record collectors, musical explorers and lifelong night creatures, Many Hands embody the spirit of Basement Soul: a shared, communal journey through global rhythms and warm, analogue textures.
