Disc jockey duo Many Hands have unveiled the playlist for Basement Soul episode 50, airing on Scientific Sound Asia, the electronic music radio station, promoter and DJ agency connecting underground sounds with expatriate and local audiences across Asia and internationally.
Many Hands is the collaborative project of DJs Jona J and Kava, whose shared musical curiosity and deep-rooted club culture experience underpin the series. Now based in Berlin, the duo bring together a wide-ranging spectrum of influences shaped by years of digging, travelling and performing across multiple scenes.
Jona J, born in Barcelona and raised between Spain and the UK, began his DJ journey in the early 1990s within the free party and rave scene of southwest England. A subsequent move to Ibiza exposed him to the island’s Balearic sound and hedonistic club culture, an influence that has remained central to his musical outlook. After spending several formative years in Bristol, immersed in sound system culture and inner-city club life, Jona later became a familiar presence in Berlin’s international underground circuit before returning to the UK in 2020.
One of Jona’s most recognised studio projects is Nocturnal, produced with Lewis Hopkin under the alias Sapience for Tom Middleton’s Sound Of The Cosmos label. The release received radio support from respected selectors including Gilles Peterson, Mala and Laurent Garnier, reinforcing his position as a tastemaker with broad musical reach.
Kava, originally from New Zealand, has been based in Berlin for over a decade. His musical foundations were shaped in Wellington, where exposure to Soul, Bashment, Hip Hop, Disco, House, Techno and Drum and Bass informed a wide-ranging approach to selection. Early involvement in vinyl distribution and multiple radio shows across New Zealand helped refine his ear before relocating to Europe.
In Berlin, Kava became a regular contributor to the now-defunct Float Some and Jet Some radio show alongside Rodi Kirk of Scratch 22, broadcast via Berlin Community Radio. Alongside radio work, he has performed extensively across the German capital, building a reputation for adaptable, groove-led sets.
The pair first connected near OYE Records in Berlin, quickly recognising a shared musical sensibility. This meeting led to the formation of Many Hands and the launch of Basement Soul, originally conceived as an intimate basement session focused on warmth, rhythm and collective energy.
Musically, Jona J and Kava move fluidly across Disco, Soul, Latin and Afrobeat, blending live elements such as drum machines and MPCs with influences drawn from Jamaican sound system culture, West African synth traditions and European funk. Their sets are playful, sometimes raw, always dancefloor-focused, designed for movement rather than spectacle.
Rooted in vinyl culture and late-night club environments, Many Hands approach music as an investigation rather than consumption. Basement Soul episode 50 continues that ethos, offering a shared space for dancers, diggers and listeners drawn to groove-driven underground music with depth, history and intent.
The opening stretch of Many Hands Basement Soul 50 leans into reflective and experimental territory, moving through Electronica and Electronic Soul via Time and Space and Baby Boy, before touching Jazz, Funk and Soul roots on For Some We Loved. Ambient Breaks and Balearic Dub elements surface gently, setting a patient and spacious tone.
The mix then pivots toward reggae-influenced forms, with Roots Reggae and Dub selections such as Positive Vibrations and Never Give Up, balanced by Disco and electro-leaning hybrids like Lovergirl (M+M Mix). These moments connect classic vocal traditions with electronic reinterpretation.
As the episode develops, Deep House becomes the central thread. Tracks including Around The Sun, Sun Circles and Wesley Shuffle bring bleep, jazz-influenced harmony and understated groove into focus, while House cuts maintain a steady, grounded flow without shifting into peak-time territory.
The closing section blends Organic House, Electro and Electronic Soul Instrumentals, with pieces such as Unreachable Galaxy, What’s Your Voodoo and Dododo, reinforcing the show’s emphasis on texture and mood. Episode 50 closes as a cohesive journey across Deep House, soul-rooted electronics and global underground sounds.
