DJ Loxley is a Nottingham-born selector whose roots trace back to the UK rave era of the 1990s, a time defined by hardcore and jungle mixtapes, pirate radio, and the energy of teenage raves. Early exposure to influential figures such as DJ Seduction, DJ Hype, Mickey Finn, and Grooverider established a lasting connection to the sounds of jungle and drum and bass.
The early BBC Radio 1 programme “One in the Jungle” with Fabio and Grooverider proved particularly influential, reinforcing his passion for the scene. During his student years, Loxley expanded into UK Garage, DJing on vinyl and holding a weekly residency on Sheffield Live community radio, adding further depth to his musical foundation.
After a period away from music, his focus returned in 2012 when a Marcus Intalex mix reignited his dedication to drum and bass. From that point, artists such as Calibre, Intalex, Fabio, and Marky became central to his listening and inspiration, guiding him back into record collecting and mixing.
Now based in Asia, where he has lived for nearly two decades across Thailand and Vietnam, DJ Loxley represents the full spectrum of drum and bass while emphasising the deeper and more atmospheric side of the genre. His sets highlight both the classic influences that shaped him and the evolving sound of modern drum and bass.
The first hour of The Deeper Shades 1 sets a strong precedent for the series, moving through deep and minimal Drum & Bass with selections from Mark System, Lynx, and Need For Mirrors. The early section is infused with atmospheric and soulful textures, highlighted by Marcus Intalex’s Hot Hands and Bungle’s Aline, cementing the show’s grounding in deep-rooted DnB traditions.
As the mix progresses, Loxley introduces darker and more experimental cuts from Skeptical, J:Kenzo, and dBridge, layering half-step and leftfield rhythms into the blend. These tracks push boundaries while staying anchored in the minimal, deep Drum & Bass sound, creating a sense of exploration in the first half.
Transitioning into the second hour, the energy shifts towards the dancefloor with jump-up and rollers from Dutta, DJ Direkt, and Manifest. Ragga and jungle influences emerge through Suv & K Jah’s Bubble Soup, while Liquid grooves from Carlito and Roygreen & Protone maintain balance, showing Loxley’s ability to weave between high energy and melodic depth.
Closing out the debut, soulful and vocal-led selections like Crystal Clear’s Slow It Down and Chimpnc & Yemi Bolatiwa’s The Way bring warmth, before Calibre’s timeless Just Fine provides a classic liquid finale. Loxley’s first Deeper Shades journey showcases the full breadth of Drum & Bass culture, from experimental edges to soulful rollers, setting the tone for an exciting new residency on Scientific Sound Asia.
Tune in live on Thursday, September 25th, from 8 PM to 10 PM Indochina Time (ICT). A replay will be available on Monday, from 8 AM to 10 AM (ICT).
