Scientific Sound Asia presents the latest edition of Velvety Elements, hosted by Portuguese DJ and producer Joshua. As part of the station’s mission to connect underground artists across Asia and beyond, the series shines a light on house music in its most soulful, groove-driven, and emotionally resonant forms.
Based in Évora, Portugal, DJ Joshua has been active in electronic music since the 1990s. His vast collection of vinyl, cassettes, CDs, and digital media reflects decades of dedication to sound and to preserving underground culture. While his career has evolved through techno, drum and bass, and chillout, house music has always remained at the heart of his creative identity.
During quieter years for Portugal’s underground movement, Joshua kept the scene alive by organising grassroots events and encouraging collaboration among artists. After stepping back to focus on family life, he returned with renewed passion, launching Floating Beats, a show known for its melodic and immersive selections, and later Velvety Elements, which explores the deeper and more soulful dimensions of house.
Producing under aliases such as K-Joshua, Joshua Marian, Joshua Fernand, and Joshua Onairam, he expresses multiple facets of his artistry, from percussive minimal grooves to melodic, heartfelt house. In 2024, he founded JFLM Recordings, a label dedicated to his own productions and those of forward-thinking artists pushing deep, warm, and human-centred sounds.
Recent highlights include the Nobody Waiting For Me EP as Joshua Marian on Back to the Beat in late 2024, pairing the organ-driven title track with the nostalgic I Love You. Other standouts like Just Love and Chance With Soul further demonstrate his ability to craft soulful, uplifting house music that connects with both emotion and movement.
Through Velvety Elements, Joshua continues to refine his distinctive approach while reaching listeners around the world. Each episode offers a seamless fusion of depth, rhythm, and warmth, giving audiences a space to reconnect with the essence of house music.
Velvety Elements 283 opens with Restless Soul’s After Hours (Phreak Time Mix) and Manuel Sahagun’s Slow Shake, immediately setting a late-night groove built on lush basslines and rhythmic depth. Finest Wear follows with West Bay, maintaining that signature Deep House warmth before Josh Wink’s The Deepness introduces a subtle Progressive House pulse, pushing the set into hypnotic territory.
Midway through the mix, DJ Joshua shifts towards classic House rhythms with Darius Syrossian’s Work It With Me and Denney’s Turn It Up, both adding energy while staying true to the show’s smooth aesthetic. Gene Farris injects old-school flair with New Jack City, while Tuccillo’s Gotta Be Free brings soulful balance, blending vintage groove and modern flow.
As the show continues, Fresh & Low’s No Going Back and Sasse & Klas Lindblad’s Holmenkollen delve deeper into lush textures and warm analogue tones, showcasing Joshua’s refined selection style. Vincent Caira’s Been Dancing keeps the energy vibrant, its layered percussion guiding listeners through an elegant dancefloor journey.
Closing with Enrico Mantini’s What You Like, Joshua wraps the set on a beautifully understated note. This week’s Velvety Elements perfectly captures the connection between Deep House, House, and subtle Progressive touches, a smooth, heartfelt session from one of Scientific Sound Asia’s most consistent resident DJs.
