Bicycle Corporation announces track-list for ‘Roots’ 042.
Bicycle Corporation's Roots 042 blends Brazilian Music, Disco, House & Jazz into an eclectic, globally-inspired musical journey.
Funk developed in the United States during the mid-1960s from African American rhythm and blues, soul and jazz. It shifted focus away from melody and chord changes toward syncopated rhythm, repeated basslines and tightly connected drum, guitar and horn parts.
James Brown played a central role by placing strong emphasis on the first beat of each bar and treating individual instruments as parts of one interlocking groove. Recordings by Brown and his band established a rhythmic approach that later shaped funk, disco, hip hop and electronic dance music.
Artists including Sly and the Family Stone, Parliament-Funkadelic, The Meters, Ohio Players, Kool and the Gang and Earth, Wind & Fire expanded the style through the 1970s. Their music brought in psychedelic production, electronic keyboards, large horn sections, vocal harmonies and extended arrangements built for dancing.
Funk bassists and drummers became especially important, since the genre depended on precise interaction between rhythm-section parts. Slap bass, clipped guitar chords, syncopated percussion and call-and-response vocals became common features across many regional and stylistic variations.
During the late 1970s and 1980s, Funk fed directly into Disco, Boogie, Electro, Hip Hop and early House Music. Producers and DJs sampled funk drum breaks, basslines and vocal phrases, giving the genre a lasting role in the development of modern club and beat-based music.
The Funk category can include classic soul-funk, psychedelic funk, jazz-funk, P-Funk, electronic funk and later productions built around the same rhythmic principles. Its defining feature stays the groove created through repetition, syncopation and the close relationship between bass, drums and percussion.
At Scientific Sound Asia, funk is a defining feature of Roots, with further appearances on Basement Soul and Funk Sessions.
