Bicycle Corporation presents Roots episode 036 on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
Bicycle Corporation is the Italian collaboration of DJ and producer Marco Mei and Stefano Ugliano, also known as 6884. Together, they have released more than 50 original productions and remixes spanning house and techno.
Marco began DJing during the early 1990s, drawn to the emergence of electronic music and Afrocentric sounds. He subsequently organised house music and techno events across Italy through the Urban People collective.
His work led to a residency at Pacha in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, and international DJ appearances. Marco is based in Taipei, works across a wider South East Asian network and broadcasts weekly through Scientific Sound Asia.
Born and raised in Torino, Stefano showed an early aptitude for music through classical piano, percussion and drums. His musical interests also included Chopin’s compositions and the rhythmic traditions of West African djembe.
As his interest in music developed, Stefano was drawn to the electronic DJ and the sounds rarely heard on Italian radio during the 1990s. Those discoveries marked the beginning of his involvement with electronic music.
Roots provides Bicycle Corporation with space for the foundational influences behind their electronic releases, including funk, disco, soul, Afrobeat, electro, rare groove, dub, reggae, Brazilian music, hip hop and Afrocentric sounds. Bicycle Corporation’s Roots episode 036 programme, which aired on 24 May 2020, draws together records from several eras and traditions. Delegation’s Put A Little Love On Me opens with an R&B cut on Dance Revival, before Maceo Parker & The JBs’ Pass The Peas, The Jacksons’ Can You Feel It (The Reflex Revision) and Chuck Brown, Feta and The Silver Rider’s Burro E Somburro establish a Funk- and Disco-leaning opening.
The Fatback Band featuring The Owl’s Yum Yum, released through Silver Side Productions, brings in a Hip Hop element. The Whispers’ I Can Make It Better (DJ Delivery Edit), Djoko’s Be Rea, DJ Rubens’ Give It Up and Edwin Starr’s Get Up shift the programme towards club-oriented selections, with Djoko and DJ Rubens introducing House Music.
Dom Um Romão’s Amor En Jacuma on Original Jazz Classics brings Jazz Music into the sequence. Airto Moreira’s Toque De Cuica, issued by WM Brazil, adds jazz-funk percussion, while In Flagranti and Ayakamay’s Kachi Kachi on Take It Easy and Gloria Gaynor’s Anybody Wanna Party on Polydor return the set to house and R&B.
Brenda Harris’ Making Love Will Keep You Fit (Massimiliano Pagliara Edit) brings a Nu-Disco touch to the middle stretch. T-Connection featuring Micheal The Lion’s Do What U Wanna Do (Edit), Pat Metheny Group and David Bowie’s This Is Not America, and Skatt Bros.’ Walk The Night on Universal Records move from disco material towards Indie Dance.
Sly & Robbie’s In Dub introduces dub and Reggae before the final Brazilian section. Jorge Ben’s O’ Namorado da Viúva and Pulo Pulo, the latter on Seven Up Records, bring Brazilian rhythms and samba into focus.
Giulio Camarca’s Manha, recorded with Trinidad and released on Shirak, closes Roots 036 with a Brazilian bossa nova-inflected finish. The final record leaves the programme in the same broad musical territory that informs Bicycle Corporation’s work, connecting rhythmic, melodic and dancefloor-focused selections.
