Chillout music developed as a broad category for slower, atmospheric recordings meant for relaxed listening rather than peak-time dancing. Its foundations take in ambient music, dub, jazz, soul, electronic experimentation and the quieter side of post-disco club culture.
The term became closely associated with dedicated chillout rooms at British clubs and raves during the late 1980s and early 1990s. These spaces gave dancers somewhere to rest while DJs played ambient, downtempo, dub and unconventional records at lower volume and tempo.
Ibiza also played a key role, through sunset sessions, beach bars and open-format DJ sets that mixed electronic music with acoustic, Latin, soul and world influences. Venues such as Café del Mar helped establish a melodic style later marketed internationally through compilation albums.
Artists including The KLF, The Orb, Nightmares on Wax, José Padilla and Mixmaster Morris each defined a different side of the category. Their work connected ambient production with sampled beats, dub effects, field recordings and slower electronic rhythms.
Chillout expanded through the 1990s and 2000s into downtempo, ambient house, trip hop, lounge and Balearic-influenced electronic music. The category now covers a wide range of calm, spacious and rhythmically restrained music, suited to late-night listening, social spaces and the quieter stretches of a DJ set.
At Scientific Sound Asia, chillout occasionally surfaces within Roots.
