Bicycle Corporation announced the track list for Roots 207
Bicycle Corporation Roots episode 207 covers Funk, Disco and Soul with music from James Brown, Manu Dibango, Sylvester, Bombers and…
Synth Pop developed during the late 1970s and early 1980s as artists placed synthesisers, drum machines and sequencers at the centre of popular songwriting. The style grew from electronic music, new wave, post-punk, disco and the increasing availability of more affordable studio technology.
Early foundations can be heard in the work of Kraftwerk, Giorgio Moroder, Yellow Magic Orchestra and other artists who used electronic instruments to build structured, melodic music. British acts including The Human League, Gary Numan, Depeche Mode, OMD and Soft Cell later brought Synth Pop into the mainstream.
The genre commonly combines electronic rhythms, sequenced basslines and synthesised melodies with conventional verses, choruses and vocal hooks. Some recordings are minimal and mechanical, while others use layered arrangements, romantic lyrics and polished dance production.
During the 1980s, Synth Pop became closely connected with music television, club culture and the international growth of new wave. Artists including Pet Shop Boys, Eurythmics, New Order and Erasure expanded the style through House, Disco and alternative dance influences.
Synth Pop declined as a dominant commercial category towards the end of the decade, but its production methods stayed influential across electronic and popular music. Later revivals appeared through electroclash, Indie Dance, Nu Disco, synthwave and contemporary pop built around analogue-style synthesisers.
The Synth Pop category can include classic electronic pop, new wave crossover records and later productions that keep the same melodic, machine-led character. Its defining feature is the combination of accessible songwriting with electronic instrumentation and programmed rhythm.
At Scientific Sound Asia, synth pop occasionally surfaces within Roots and Marco Mei.
