Experimental music is a broad category for work that challenges established structures, production methods and ideas about how music should be created or heard. Rather than describing one fixed sound, it takes in artists testing unusual instruments, recording techniques, forms, rhythms and combinations of genre.
Its foundations reach through twentieth-century modernism, musique concrète, electronic composition, minimalism, free improvisation and early tape experimentation. Composers and producers used found sounds, altered instruments, repetition, chance procedures and studio manipulation to move beyond conventional harmony and song form.
Electronic technology expanded these possibilities further through synthesisers, samplers, computers, effects units and digital editing. Artists could reshape recorded material, build unfamiliar textures and combine acoustic and electronic sources without following traditional performance methods.
Experimental music later spread across ambient, industrial, noise, jazz, rock, hip hop, techno and other electronic styles. Labels and independent scenes supported work that sat outside mainstream formats, while galleries, festivals and sound installations offered settings beyond clubs and concert halls.
The category can include abstract electronics, unconventional rhythms, field recordings, improvised pieces, sound collage and hybrid productions that resist narrower classification. Experimental is best understood as an approach based on exploration and rule-breaking, rather than a single genre with fixed musical features.
At Scientific Sound Asia, experimental occasionally surfaces within Roots and Not So Anonymous.
